It is a struggle at times to get students to collaborate in online courses. While my courses are online, I, like Joel, felt that this course would contain useful information and strategies to better reach and engage with students.          <description><![CDATA[<p>Hi All,</p><p><br></p><p>My current academic role is as an Instructional Specialist for the School of Animal Comparative and Biomedical Sciences at the University of Arizona. One of my roles is as a course manager for a Human and Animal Interrelationships course with an enrollment of 1,000 students so I am particularly interested in learning strategies tailored towards larger classrooms.</p><p><br></p><p>One of the biggest aspects of this course that I would like to redesign are the discussions. Despite discussions constituting a larger proportion of the grade, there is very little interactivity on them and I would like to learn how to better facilitate discussions to encourage more involved participation. </p><p><br></p><p>-Kassi</p>]]></description>

I teach a large 160-180 in-person course each Spring semester, and have been doing so for about 7 years. I'd really like to reinvigorate the course and am hopeful this class will give me some great strategies!</p><p><br></p><p>I'd like to redesign the course in terms of having students complete more collaborative projects/assignments during class time. I think flipping the class could be really great, but I have some reservations. I'm also looking to redesign how my learning assistants engage with students during class time.</p>]]></description>

I don't teach large courses currently, but for about 9 years I taught a section of Intro Bio (MCB 181) that ranged from 350-600 students. I love the energy of big classes and the opportunity to engage with new biology learners. </p><p>I would like to use active learning-strategies that personalize learning and build community in the very large class. I would like each student to feel as if they are a valued and unique member of our learning community. I'd also like to use strategies or incentives that promote attendance at office hours or "study sessions." </p>]]></description>

Most of the courses I teach are centered around learning how to use technology, so it can be challenging to apply active learning effectively, especially with larger groups of students. </p><p><br></p><p>I don't have anything to redesign at this point, but I am excited to learn new information or ideas to create an environment that promotes active learning in all my courses. I'm also curious how some of these techniques or methods could be applied to online courses where active learning may not be as easy to implement. </p>]]></description>

The rest of the students does not get involved, unless I ask someone to answer that particular question. But that is just a dream because I will be teaching an active learning class in a room set up for lecturing. So, one think I will be working on is how to engage students in collaborative learning when the environmental cues are "we're here for a lecture."</p>]]></description>
