I rated this book...

The rating I gave to this book was a 10. I gave this book a perfect rating because of how relatable and raw it is. It really gives you an inside look on the thoughts, experiences, and feelings of the main character. It's helpful to know why she does what she does and it's more realistic than simply reading a story someone wrote, just telling what happens. It's almost as if you're actually reading someone's diary (it's written in journal entry form) and that makes it incredibly more interesting. Heading back to the point I mentioned earlier, I love how I can relate to the book. I am her age, in her situation with a great home life, in high school like she is, and so on. Relating to it makes it more interesting and more plausible that hey, problems like hers happen to kids like me, and anyone else, everyday.

Partying is really where the main character started showing all these problems and developing these addictions. Each time she would go to a different one, she would step out of her "comfort zone" to try a new drug or go for a different guy, and it would only escalate from there. Her desire to fit in got the best of her and she began to find validity in getting wasted every weekend and coming to school high. She thought she looked cool, she felt on top of the world, and she loved the attention. But later on we learn that in the end, it means nothing and it only causes conflict.

Source: http://www.pumasounds.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/house-party.jpg

http://www.michaelshouse.com

The main character attends a rehab facility in Palm Springs, and this is what I imagine it looked like. She went back and forth several times and made immense progress. Meeting a girl with the same story as her while at the facility was one of the biggest turning points in her life, it helped her to relate to her addiction and to become more aware of how it was really affecting her.

I wonder...

I wonder...how the main character would've fared had she not been around those terrible influences in her life. It proves how powerful other people can be towards you and how deeply their thoughts can affect you. For example in the novel, there was a point where the main character was in a fight with her best friend at the time, and the two weren't talking. The best friend was the main influence in her life, always pushing her to go to parties and smoke and drink. When the two were separated, the main character made major progress towards her problems without anyone intervening; she didn't feel the need to use drugs or drink or seek something she could never find at a party. Now, of course we wouldn't have a novel if that was the case, but it makes the point that who you surround yourself with, you inevitably become.

Lock and Key

The main character, in the midst of the drama and action corrupting her life, does meet this one boy. He's not like the rest, he does deeply care about her and respects her. He isn't a sexual predator who only wants her body like the other boy she's infactuated with, named Blake. He isn't like her best friend, Ross, who's gay. He isn't like her previous crush, Nathan, because he actually likes her back. In the middle of the novel, he shows her this lock and key necklace he got from church, and he passionately tells her about how he wants to give it to the girl who one day takes his virginity. The main character is taken aback, and she pretty much stops talking to him. This is significant because it shows how warped her sense of love and affection is. She basically disregarded his choice and thought it was pointless, almost embarrassing for her.
Now instead, she chooses the guy who doesn't show her the same amount of respect, acts cruel towards her and apologizes later because he knows she'll take him back, and ends up hurting her terribly.

Source: https://s3.amazonaws.com/lollipuff/media/blog/251/how-to-make-lock-key-necklace.jpg

Towards the end of the novel, she and her friends were driving home from a school dance, all under the influence of marijuana. She talks about how nervous she was in the novel, how hard it was to focus, and how she's lucky she didn't kill anyone. Eventually, she ran a stoplight and a cop stopped the car, and everyone received DUI's. In the link, the situation is similar; a drunk driver kills an innocent person in a collision. Even though the main character had second thoughts and doubts, she still chose to make a decision that could've permanently destroyed someone's life.

The main character's brother, Cam, is a minor character that really tried to steer the main character towards a better path. He constantly called her to check up on her, supervised her at the parties she went to (because he knew that he couldn't stop her from going, so why not keep an eye on her?), and tried to protect her as best he could from the guys who had malintentions with her. He supported her when she became clean and stopped partying by doing the same thing (although he never did drugs, he only drank). He tries his best to make a mark on her life, and she knows he's trying to be a good big brother, but for the most part she disregards all his warnings. Eventually, the main character begins to think Cam is taking her parent's side, but he's an outsider looking in at all of her issues.

I chose this image because I envisioned the main character's house looking this way: a quiet family home close to the beach, not a problem in sight, looks perfect from the outside. In reality, the inside of it is broken and torn apart. This shows how a great upbringing, love and support from both parents, and every want and need fulfilled imaginable, can still not be enough for drugs and a detrimental lifestyle to affect you. The main character's had all that and more, so many people cared about her, yet it didn't matter in the end.

Source: https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/originals/c6/be/44/c6be44ce1d0e9e3e2e0cb6f9a0c26132.jpg

The author of these journals, who remains anonymous, has a pattern of naming his/her book titles after popular songs or other references. I chose this song not only because of that, but some of the imagery in the lyrics of the song is very similar to when the main character took LSD with her friends on a hiking trip. The song talks about the colors of the trees and the sky, similar to the main character describing her surroundings. In the novel, the main character used the sun to figure out which way to go and follow her friends, similar to how you're supposed to search for "Lucy in the sky" in the song.
