Chang'an, April 5, 200 Dawn

After traveling to Chang'an to begin my trip. I met the merchants. Most goods being transported are silk, gunpowder, and paper. This morning looking at the map looking at the main silk road route we will be taking. I can see that we will be approaching the Gobi desert soon and I must do what I can to prepare my caravan for those conditions. We have many soldiers so hopefully the likelihood of us getting attacked or robbed will be slim. My camel is saddled and my canteen full of water. Breakfast was good today. Hopefully food along will be as good as food at home.

Dunhuang, June 1, 200 Evening

We are back in my home town of Dunhaung. I have gathered the belongings I'm going to bring with me to Antioch. Dunhaung is a very religious diverse area. Growing up here I learned much about each different religion, and tonight I listened as some of my fellow travelers discussed Buddhism, Hinduism, and Confucianism. My parents taught me to practice Confucianism, and I continue to to this day. I truly believe this is the best way to have a peaceful life. I expressed these feelings over dinner, but not all of my fellow travelers agreed, in fact I am certain a few of them resent me for my beliefs. The silk road has been the cause of many religions spreading, and it is my hope that people all over will learn about and respect what the other believes. Tomorrow we will travel into the Gobi desert. I have instructed everyone to stock up on fresh water and both warm and cool clothing. I must finish packing my own belongings before the morning.

Gobi Desert, June 12, 200, Midday

Today has been one of the most miserable days of my life. As the caravan leader I am in charge of not only myself, but everyone else as well. I've heard stories of people passing out from the heat of this desert and being left behind. Part of my job is to make sure that doesn't happen to anyone in my caravan, but I'm doing all I can to stay alert myself. This land is very barren, nothing but hot sand for miles. The sky seems to stretch forever above me and the sun beating down on my neck feels like a brand on the back of my neck. It is all I can do to stop people from dropping in despair. This desert has started to play tricks on us all. Seeing things, hearing thing, even tasting things I wish were really here. The food on this journey has not been as good as my breakfast back in Chang'an. I long for a bed and a comfortable place to rest, but I must be a strong leader. This day alone has felt like 100 years. Hopefully when we make it to Marakanda we won't all be fried.

Marakanda, September, 23, 200, Afternoon

After the long days of desert, Marakanda is a very welcome sight. The city is blooming with color, smells, and vegetation. The diversity of people here is great and my caravan feel right at home among the other traveling foreigners. Watching the inhabitants here work their various crafts is truly a beautiful sight. The city is blooming with innovation. Compared to the desert the temperature here is pleasant, I finally feel as though I can relax. Outside a market I stopped to look at my map and get a grasp of what is ahead. There will not be another good place to really rest until we make it to Antioch. We pass near the Caspian Sea and over the Tigris river. I should begin to find the necessities to make that cross smooth, even though it is days away. I've learned in my journey it is better to think ahead then try to improvise in the moment especially as a leader.

Antioch, April 22, 201, Evening

FINALLY! The journey is complete. At every stop more and more people stayed behind or turned back. I am among a dozen of us who made it all the way to the end. It was the hardest thing I've done so far in my short life. Some days were hard and long, full of hot beating sun, angry merchants and sweat filled clothes. In each new place I met new interesting people who all of something different to offer the world. I reviewed the ledger of our trades and found that my caravan very well. We still need to pick up the 200 Ferghana horses, but I will give that job to someone else as I am to stay in Antioch. In Markanda we traded 10 ceramic vases for 20 bags of Indian pepper. In Rhague we traded 500 seeds for orange trees for 500 grape vine seeds. We received 5 rhinoceros horns for 50 sheets of paper in Palmyra. Lots of Silk was traded, but that is why we call it the silk road. Unfortunately we lost some silk, camel, and driver in the desert. That was my biggest regret of the trip, not being able to get everyone safely through. Our final trade was here in Antioch, 50 bars of iron for 30 Roman colored glass vases. There are times of the journey that will probably haunt me for the rest of my life, but I am ready to start fresh here in Antioch. I wouldn't trade anything for the experience I gained on this trip. I have many years ahead of me to gain more, but I will always remember my trip across the Silk Road.
