They struggled with finding the most relevant information. Instead of finding short phrases which were easy to comprehend, many students wanted to underline whole sentences which were much more complicated. I am glad you suggested to have them only underline 2, because 3 would have been way to much! Once they had a quote, it took them a long time to put it in their own words. I had to scaffold the process a lot. It helped when I gave them a sentence starter based on the claim. Overall I think the activity was great though because they were really thinking about the content and its true meaning in relation to the claim and their life. Overall both Mr. Pestlin and I felt the lesson went well. Students were engaged and respectful even though there was a small amount of off task behavior (talking, putting head down, asking off topic questions). Students responded to the Hot Seat activity well, although 2 of the 6 students who were representing the sides of the court cases were nervous about performing in front of the class (they completed the activity anyway).
