Negative: Harmful Language

In Chapter 7, harmful language is shown when Joe makes rude and unnecessary comments about Janie's appearance to lower her self esteem. He says, "You ain’t no young girl to be gettin’ all insulted ’bout yo’ looks. You ain’t no young courtin’ gal. You’se uh ole woman, nearly forty." (Hurston 79) Joe said this to make Janie feel undesirable and unattractive. This is a negative trait to see in a partner, if they display this trait it is because they want you to have low self esteem and be easy to control. Harmful language is usually used when the partner is insecure and believes that their partner is too good for them. Joe knows that despite Janie's age, she is still a beautiful woman and he knows he is not aging as gracefully, so he continues to beat down her confidence.

Positive: Quality Time

"He set it up and began to show her and she found herself glowing inside. Somebody wanted her to play. Somebody thought it natural for her to play. That was even nice" (Hurston 96) When Janie first met Tea Cake, he went out of his way to teach her a game she had never played. Tea Cakes decision to include Janie in a game no one had ever thought to is a display of quality time. He wanted to spend time with Janie and had a meaningful moment for them both. This is shown more in Chapter 12, "Tea Cake and Janie gone hunting. Tea Cake and Janie gone fishing. Tea Cake and Janie gone to Orlando to the movies. Tea Cake and Janie gone to a dance. Tea Cake making flower beds in Janie’s yard and seeding the garden for her. Chopping down that tree she never did like by the dining room window" Tea Cake gave Janie his undivided attention and made her feel included and loved.

Positive: Words of Affirmation

In Chapter 11, Janie tells Tea Cake that she wants a real relationship and doesn't him to lead her on, Tea Cake responds with, "Janie, Ah hope God may kill me, if Ah’m lyin’. Nobody else on earth kin hold uh candle tuh you, baby. You got de keys to de kingdom" (Hurston 121) This is an example of the love language Words of Affirmation. Tea Cake is giving Janie reassurance that she has his heart and he does not want to be with anyone else. Words of affirmation are essential to a healthy relationship, they make the partner feel loved and appreciated. Tea cake constantly tries to bring Janie up and make her feel good with compliments and this makes her happier in the relationship.

In chapter 13, Tea Cake leaves Janie and said he was going out for fish. In reality, he didn’t come back and took her money. She was left distraught and felt deceived. He later comes back and states, “Ah see whut it is. You doubted me ‘bout de money. Thought Ah had done took it and gone. Ah don’t blame yuh but it wasn’t lak you think. De girl baby ain’t born and her mama is dead, dat can git me tuh spend our money on her. Ah told yo’ before dat you got de keys tuh de kingdom. You can depend on dat” (Hurston 120-121). Tea cake left her behind and when he came back he realized how he made her feel. Excluded but he still had room to make it up to her.

"[H]e slapped Janie until she had a ringing sound in her ears and told her about her brains before he stalked on back to the store" (Hurston 72).

On the power and control wheel, physical violence might just be the worst type of domestic abuse someone could experience. Janie was wronged in this way many times throughout her marriages, the first time was when her second husband, Jody said the dinner she made tasted awful and suddenly started slapping her. This attack was already uncalled for, but what makes it even worse is that he makes it out to be her fault while hurling insults and leaving her no room to argue. After this Janie and Jody no longer acted like a couple in private while keeping up appearances in public.

"Joe didn’t make many speeches with rhymes to her, but he bought her the best things the butcher had, like apples and a glass lantern full of candies" (Hurston 34).

Janie's first marriage with Logan Killick was less than ideal, he made her do a lot of farm work without treating her to nice things. This ended when she decided to run away and marry Jody Stark, a promising bachelor that was promising to treat her like a queen. Although she ended up running away with him, she still wasn't sure he was the one. These fancy and luxurious gift's were a new experience for her, so this was the perfect thing to increase their bond early on.

"They fought and somehow he managed to bite Tea Cake high up on his cheek-bone once. Then Tea Cake finished him and sent him to the bottom to stay there" (Hurston 166).

This act of service was during the flood where T & J are swimming for safety but get attacked by a rabid dog. When Janie tried to climb onto the floating cow the dog was guarding it with murderous eyes. Thankfully though, Jody was able to protect her, using his knife to fight it off, but got bit in the process. This selfless act where he saves Janie's life while risking his own, shows the lengths he'll go for Janie.

Janie used to wake up to Tea Cake every morning. “Janie woke next morning by feeling Tea Cake almost kissing her breath away. Holding her and caressing her as if he feared she might escape his grasp and fly away” (Hurston 107). In this section, Janie is being held and cherished by Tea Cake through touch. He makes her feel safe without saying a word. The physical bond is so strong they feel connected even in silence.
