Alabama produced an array of natural items that could be made into goods, with the main crop being cotton. The governor at the time, Andrew B. Moore was focused on making sure Alabama remained thriving in the cotton industry. Life in Alabama was no different from the lifestyles in other slave states. In the South, their entire economy was based  off of slaves. This is one of the reasons why not ending slavery was even an option. Slaves were how they made their money and who did the job. This battle lasted for 21 days and there was around 1,822 casualties. Since Mobile Bay was one of the two main Confederate ports open during the time, it caused the Union’s navy to established a blockade at the ports because they wanted to stop blockade runnings, which allowed the Confederacy to gain their supplies needed for war. The Union laid siege to forts Morgan and Gaines, and both were captured within several weeks. Admiral Franklin Buchanan and David G. Farragut were working for the Union to block the port on both sides. On the Confederate side, they used the C.S.S. Tennessee, a flotilla of one ironclad, and three gunboats to protect the port. Alabama’s involvement in the Civil War all began with Governor Andrew B. Moore.  Moore recommended that the mineral district around Birmingham be developed and that construction of the South and North Railroad to happen sooner so that the vast mineral resources of Alabama could be connected with the rest of the South. Moore was only mainly against secession, but was willing to secede if Lincoln won the presidential election. After Lincoln became president, Moore called for a secession convention on January 11, 1861. Most of the changes after the Civil War were progressive changes. Starting with the trade industry, industry and trade helped the cities grow tremendously. Specifically coal and iron allowed many companies to open. The more companies open the more raw materials could be traded and the more capital Alabama could gain. Some of the raw materials that Alabama became known for was coal, iron ore, and limestone. A few years after the civil war, Alabama had 13 textile industries that employed more than 2000 people. Also, this changed the way people lived. At this time, education became available to a lot more people. Although there wasn’t slavery, there was still segregation between whites and blacks. After the civil war, Alabama decided to write a new constitution. The only people who really benefitted from this was white men, but it didn’t cause as much oppression as it did before.
