Pictured above is a placard that was used in the 2015 Baltimore Protests surrounding the death of Freddie Gray. Freddie Gray was a 25-year-old African-American man who unfortunately lost his life due to an act of police brutality. The definition of community service learning to me is a group of individuals who come together to address and bring awareness to social issues that are prevalent in today's society. Individuals who engage in community service learning help to bring social issues into the limelight and find ways to bring change to these issues. I chose this picture to represent community service learning because after Freddie Gray died, his death gained nation-wide attention because of community led protests and social media posts. Since the protests in 2015, there have been several organizations and charities commemorated in memory of Freddie Gray and other victims of police brutality.

Community Building in a diverse society

Pictured above is a painting of Eunice Kennedy Shriver and five other individuals who have participated in the special olympics. Eunice Kennedy Shriver was the creator of the special olympics, which is a non-profitable organization that provides training for individuals that have intellectual disabilities. The definition of community building in a diverse community is to emphasize creating an environment in which individuals can feel that they are welcomed and respected. I chose this painting created by David Lenz to represent community building in a diverse society because Eunice Shriver created an inclusive organization for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The special olympics has become a safe space for more than 4.9 million individuals to compete across the world.

Pictured above are the buttons that were worn by farm workers in the early 1960's. These buttons were given out to farm workers at the United Farm Workers (UFW) convention led by Cesar Chavez. The definition of leadership is the ability to lead a community of individuals to accomplish a goal within said community. Cesar Chavez was an activist who led conventions and boycotts to expand the rights of farm workers. I chose these buttons to represent leadership because they demonstrate the hard work Chavez and other farm workers put into their boycotts. The work of Chavez ultimately expanded farm workers' rights and Chavez quickly became a renowned leader in the United States.

Pictured above is a photograph of children painting landscapes at their local community art center. This picture was taken in the early 1900's, when it was difficult for African-American children to have access to quality education. My definition of scholarship is the ability to develop academic skills that can be applied to everyday life. I chose this image of these young children to represent scholarship because they are painting images and developing skills that will help them as they continue to further their education.

Pictured above is the peace medal that was given to the chiefs of Native-American tribes who helped the colonists in King Phillip's War. My definition of citizenship is the ability to maintain peace, respect, and civility amongst a group of individuals. I chose the peace medal to represent citizenship because the peace medal served as a token of friendship and peace throughout the 16th to 19th centuries. The peace medal was a tangible representation of respect for an individual and that is what should be upheld by active citizens in today's society.
