Before this unit, all I knew was that this rock band wrote "Hello, Goodbye" and that this band has been a group for 12 years, longer than One Direction. Sadly that's all I knew, but the significance of this memory is that I at least knew OF The Beatles. The Beatles were such an important part in the history of the rock and roll genre in the 1960s, and they still are of importance now in the 21st century. Besides being Liverpool's success, The Beatles brought back to America the music they lost following "The Day The Music Died" in 1959. The Quarry Men changed their name multiple times from Silver Beetles, to Silver Beatles, and finally The Beatles. Here they played 6 hour sets everyday at a place called the Indra Club and then later at Kaiserkeller. With these long sets, it was hard for the band to learn enough covers and their own songs to fill up the time. This time in the Beatles history is significant because playing together for long periods of time everyday helped the band become more of a well-rounded team. Brian's family own a store that held a record section that Brian was the boss of. Brian was not totally into the music scene, but he knew business. He became the manager for the band and the first thing he did was change their appearance on stage to be more accepting by Americans and others. Kind of like how Elvis was forced to change his attire into a sleek black suit to become more accepting by American parents on the "Steve Allen Show" in 1956. Brian managed to get the rock band an audition with Capitol records, the American edition of EMI in England, but Capitol records surprisingly did not want the band. So, Brian took them to EMI, where their got signed and got partnered with the best producer in the UK, George Martin. George Martin was with the band for their entire career and brought their music to a whole new level. One of the major decisions George made for the band was that he complained about Pete Best's, the current drummer, playing and requested to issue in a studio drummer for the band. A man named Ringo Starr, from Rory Storm and The Hurricanes, met the Beatles while they were in Hamburg and became good friends with them. So, when the rock band needed a new drummer, they asked for Ringo Starr. It got so bad all over the world that the Beatles only played performances for 3 years. The Beatles first two albums, "Please Please Me" and "With The Beatles," in 1963 were both massive successes, having a fresh sounds from the Bubblegum pop at the time and the lyrics were simple and mainly about romance. There were hundreds... thousands of fans at the airport, just to watch them walk!! The Beatles have not even performed yet in America and they were already a hit. As a book "What's That Sound?" by John Covach said, "The Beatles became the hottest act in the American entertainment business almost overnight." To take advantage of this popularity and to not take it for granted, the boys took up a vigorous tour and recording production schedule. They had more than 30 top 40 US hits between 1964-1966 and 12 of these hits were #1. "The result was one of the most impressive runs of hit records ever posted in popular music," (Covach). Their album, "Meet The Beatles" got #1 a week after their performance on the "Ed Sullivan Show" and it later got bumped by their next album.
