The aftermath of the Franco-Austrian war caused states to vote to join Piedmont-Sardinia, to unify the entire peninsula. The new kingdom of Italy was proclaimed on March 17, 1861, and the new royal family of Piedmont-Sardinia are the new ruling monarchs of Italy.
