The 14 Points were not beneficial when it came to ending the war, despite the verbal support. The end of the war, which came with the Treaty of Versailles, many foreign leaders rejected the ideas because they wanted to retain their colonial advantages and punish Germany as harshly as possible. Congress refused to ratify the treaty, and many Americans had no interest in joining an international peace keeping organization because of the strong favor towards isolationism.

Wilson's 14 Points allowed a pathway for discussion about how nations can work together towards peace. Wilson's ideas on the abolition of secret treaties, freedom of the seas, free trade, and universal disarmament remain fundamental beliefs of international law and commerce today. The 14 Points provide a template for how to go about negotiating peace with other countries in order to make the world better.
