As a result, the body also produces catylase in order to counteract the effects of peroxide.          <title>Procedure</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<ol><li>Pour about 2 cm worth of water into the first test tube. This will be the control. </li><li>Place a piece of liver in test tube 1, and look for a reaction. Record the reaction in your notebook.  </li><li>Pour about 2 cm of peroxide into another test tube.  </li><li>Place a piece of liver in test tube two. Record the reaction in your notebook.  </li><li>Pour about two cm of peroxide in a third test tube.  </li><li>Light your wooden bowel/splint on fire and allow it to come to a smolder.  </li><li>Place the bowel into the peroxide and record the reaction. This is to prove that peroxide is not flammable.  </li><li>Using a fourth test tube, repeat steps three and four.  </li><li>Light your splint on fire and allow it to come to a smolder again. Touch it to the bubbles in test tube 4. If the experiment is performed correctly, the stick should spark. Record your result.  </li><li>In the fifth test tube, repeat steps 3 and four, using a piece of boiled liver. Record your results. </li></ol><div><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>1) What are enzymes?  What are their roles in chemical reactions?</strong> </div><div>Enzymes are a naturally generated protein that speeds up chemical reactions while decreasing the amount of energy required.  </div><div><strong> 2) Describe what happened to test tube 2 when hydrogen peroxide was added to the liver.  What gas was produced?  What liquid was left behind?</strong> </div><div>In test tube 2, the peroxide began to turn into bubbles that filled the test tube as it reacted with the liver. Oxygen was released, and water was left behind.   </div><div><strong>3) What effect does the red hot wood have on test tube 4? WHY is the flame being produced? </strong> </div><div> The hot wood sparks and ignites when it comes into contact with test tube four. This is because Oxygen, one of the products of the reaction, is highly flammable and in turn, reacts with the wood. </div><div><strong>4) What effect does temperature have on the enzymes (Test tube 5)?</strong> </div><div>As the temperature is changed, the enzyme denatures like it did in test tube 5. As a result, it can no longer react with the substrate. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The liver is a very important part of the human body, and one of its main function is to produce catalase, which breaks down peroxide. In doing this lab, we have proved that the liver enzymes produced in the liver and hydrogen peroxide react, and that they produce oxygen and water in the process.  </div>]]></description>
