During my exploration step where I interviewed Corine Terrell I became extremely interested in FERPA laws. High school counselors and teachers must be knowledgeable in FERPA laws to protect themselves and their students from violations. I want to expand my understanding of the current FERPA laws so that when I enter the classroom I will be able to protect myself and my students from violations.

As a future educator knowing FERPA laws and issues related to FERPA is vital. FERPA laws guard against the unlawful sharing of student's personal information. This personal information could consist of students scores, disabilities, socioeconomic status, etc. However if a student switches school systems the schools are allowed to share information relating to the student. Such Items as, "sports team roster, yearbook information or even data that can be provided to third parties, but parents must be given the opportunity to opt-out" are considered public information (FERPA SHERPA, 2018).

In the article by Schick, he explains that FERPA is being used by Universities and educational entities to circumvent the press and their access to public records. He states that, "the FERPA excuse being used more often to stop journalists seeking information related to a school's sexual assault investigation, which it's worth noting, is not an educational record (Schick, 2014)." Some are even claiming that the use of FERPA in this manor is a constitutional violation.Educational entities using these excuses have lead to some individuals calling for the end to FERPA. However, this could lead to the mass sharing of student information as it would then be public record.
