6(C) Teachers seek out opportunities to lead students, other educators, and community members within and beyond their classrooms.

What happens in the classroom is important, but not the only part of education> I hope to utilize what I have learned throughout this program and in this course to aide my students and community both in and out of the classroom. For example, at band practice this morning, the Superintendent of my school district came out to support the students AT PRACTICE. The kids were excited and worked hard, even after she left, because they felt seen by administration. Whether it is attending games, chatting about music in the hallway, or discussing life after graduation, I want to always be there for my students, and sometimes that means learning is secondary.

How can we impact the social unrest that is present in our lives and our student’s lives?

It is important that we, as educators, cater to not only the educational, but the social and emotional needs of our students. Many students who feel marginalized by who they are, whether they are People of Color, LGBTQ+, Female Identifying, or so many other communities, they need to be seen and heard. Speaking about civil and social unrest is important. I want to tell my students that I am on the right side of history, standing up for those who need it, supporting those who want it, and being there for ALL my students.

I have read on of our texts, The Oz Principal was my district's Book Study a few years ago. Based on that knowledge and the syllabus, I feel like this course will help us, not only to become effective and organized leaders, but to be leaders who are approachable. Leading a staff and students means you must be willing to put in the work to make sure everyone is lead and cared for. I hope to learn more about how to do this effectively.
