He talks through The Woman’s subsiding laughter; The Woman primps at the mirror. There’s so much I want to make for—“ 

In this quote Arthur Miller depicts the main character, Willy Loman, as disloyal. Although it is subtle, the “woman” in this quote is the woman Willy is having an affair with. The woman is laughing because Willy is promising his wife he will be loyal to his family and try to work harder for his boys where he is doing the opposite. 

The promises that will bind people’s friendships or relationships don’t usally pan out the way they should especially promises to do better ans work harder. Willy has to get in the right path and stay loyal and trustful to his family or his family will break apart and that’s the last thing anyone wants.

In Mark Twain’s 1884 “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” Huck Finn and one of the escaped slaves, Jim, form an unbreakable friendship. Both Huck and Jim are willing to sacrifice their life for each other. 

Though at first Huck did not understand that Jim was a human being, towards the end, he realizes how much they need each other. We are a country full of diversity, but we will not let this affect the people we call family. 

Sometimes we let our differences separate us, but in a family, everyone feels safe and loved. “Kate always sent her mother a card on Valentine’s Day. She timed the mails from wherever she was so that the cards arrived in February 14th... At first she made cards herself: collage and pressed grass on construction paper sewn in fabric. Now she settled for art reproductions, flossy cards with blank insides... This time she forgot... It was too late to send anything in the mail. She called her mother long distance at night when the rates were low.” (452)

Jayne Anne Phillips’s short story “Souvenir” written in 1979 the two main characters relationships and investment in it become less prevalent and both of these characters experiments regret from forming this wall between them. This boundry us formed from both the fathers death, distance, people changing, and the mothers state of wellbeing.

In th beginning of the the daughters life away from home she was devoted to sending her mom all her love in a hand crafted Valentine’s Day card but as time carried on the cards became less loving and meaningful like a dollar card you buy from a convenient store.

Distant relationships ships and personal problems can cause unchangable problems in the future which result in a non existent relationship. The best thing these chacrters should do is connect more often and send more cards to keep in touch and show affection.

“Family is the only thing that means a goddamn. You’ll learn that.” - Mawmaw 

The 2020 film Hillbilly elegy is about the struggle of family, getting out the the hillbilly culture and trying to fit in. Mawmaw, the main characters grandmother is the only one that puts him in the right track. His family is put in many difficulties, despite the challenges they have to face family always comes first and if all fails you will as well, you will feel regret and remorse for what you could have done.

In Miranda July’s 2003 “Birthmark,” the protagonist faces the battle of beauty. She has a port-wine birthmark printed on her cheek. The protagonist feared that her husband would not be attracted to her if he had met her with the port-wined stain. However, her husband  loved the girl even more with her birthmark. 

People are insecure about their imperfections. In Andre Dubus’ 1983 A Father’s Story, Luke Ripley who is the protagonist let’s go of his moral values to protect his daughter. Although Ripley’s love and forgiveness for his daughter is no excuse for the crime she committed, he is unwilling to face the truth. 

Luke Ripley is a perfect representation of what a loving and protective loving father looks like. In America, Fathers will go to great extents to save their children. 

This short story makes me think about how much a father needs a daughter. There is nothing more wholesome than a father and daughter relationship.
