When individuals are discriminated against or excluded merely on account of their characteristics and not on the basis of their proficiency or conduct. And these behaviors are shaped by race, gender, age, religion, disability, culture, and others. Discrimination is based on prejudices and preconceived notions frequently happening at the work site, the college or anywhere else and in daily living. It can be obvious and subtle, intentional or unintentional. But the impact of discrimination can be crucial for an individual’s opportunities, sense of self-worth and positioning in society.

To me, discrimination means treating someone unfairly or with less respect because of who they are rather than their character or abilities. It can be based on race, nationality, gender, religion, or social status, and it often shows through repeated mistreatment, exclusion, or humiliation. Discrimination does not only harm people emotionally, but over time it can also create deep anger, resentment, and psychological damage. In extreme cases, constant discrimination and abuse can push individuals toward harmful reactions. For example, recent news reported a tragic case where a Syrian actress was killed by her maid after ongoing mistreatment and discrimination. This shows how serious and dangerous discrimination can become when it is ignored.

Discrimination in the workplace can manifest in various ways, including religion, ethnic background, age, gender, and physical appearance. Direct discrimination may occur when an individual is treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin or their religious practices. For example, an employee might face exclusion or negative treatment based on visible attributes or beliefs.

Indirect discrimination can also be present, often in less obvious forms. A common example is when a business predominantly hires students, which may be an attempt to avoid offering full-time positions with health benefits. Such practices, while not explicitly targeting protected groups, can still result in unequal opportunities and treatment for certain individuals in the workplace.

Discrimination means treating a person unfairly or differently because of certain personal characteristics rather than their abilities or actions. These characteristics can include things like race, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or cultural background. When discrimination occurs, people may be denied opportunities, treated with less respect, or excluded from certain rights or benefits simply because of who they are.

In my view, discrimination is not only about obvious actions such as refusing to hire someone or paying them less, but it can also appear in subtle ways. For example, making assumptions about someone’s abilities, excluding them from opportunities, or creating policies that disadvantage certain groups can also be forms of discrimination. These actions can negatively affect a person’s confidence, career opportunities, and sense of belonging.

Overall, discrimination creates inequality because it prevents people from being treated fairly and equally in society, especially in areas like employment, education, and housing. Recognizing discrimination is important so that individuals and organizations can work toward creating more inclusive and respectful environments for everyone.

Discrimination is when a person or group is treated unfairly because of certain personal characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. It can happen in obvious ways, like refusing to hire someone because of who they are, or in less obvious ways, like having rules or practices that seem fair but negatively affect certain people more than others. Discrimination is important to recognize because it can limit opportunities, create unequal treatment, and make people feel excluded in workplaces and everyday life.
