Rose, throughout the story of "Fences" exhibits emotions of loyalty, love, and strength. Rose loves her family unconditionally and would do anything for them. She shows persistent strength even after finding out about Troy's affair, and even takes care of the lovechild after Alberta passes away from birth complications. Rose stated "I'll take care of your baby for you. 'Cause, like you say, she innocent. You can't visit the sins of the father upon the child."

Rose never found out about Alberta and Troy's affair when Troy broke the news that he was going to become a father. At the end of the story she was a happier and wiser person.

Rose thinks of her self as an independent woman, she does what she can for who she loves. While Troy and Bono see her more as an addition to Troy, his other half. Rose is a compelling character. "I been standing with you! I been right here with you, Troy. I got a life too. I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot with you. Don’t you think I ever wanted other things? Don’t you think I had dreams and hopes? . . . Don’t you think it ever crossed my mind to want to know other men?"

I chose this song as a reference to where Troy and Rose's relationship stands, and how it's affecting their children. While the song is about a divorce and child custody, I think it still holds its point. Troy and Rose's relationship holds a lot of similarity's to one you'd see with a household that has split parents. Cory and Lyons had their own disagreements and battles with Troy, and Raynell was a product of Troy's inability to be a good father for his family. "Hey, Ma and Pa, what the hell is wrong with y'all? Hey, Ma and Pa, why'd the family rise and fall?" "Fighting for love on an angel's feather. Why don't y'all get your - together?"

Post 6 - Theme and Explanation

The theme of "Fences" is to keep your loved ones close, to keep them in your life no matter what. Rose shows this theme the most over the course of the story very well. She was married to a man who did not love her like she loved him, yet still kept him in her life, bared his children, and kept the lovechild of Troy and Alberta's affair as her own after Alberta died. Rose's main concern in her life was the people around her, she took care of the people she loved first before she took care of herself. "Well, I've been standing with you! I gave eighteen years of my life to stand in the same spot as you!"
