They always see shadows dancing and travelling on the walls; that was their perception of reality. Shadows. One man is able to escape and see the outside world. Once he does, he was temporarily blinded then saw a 'greater reality'. He rushes back to the cave to tell the other 2 men, but they don't believe him. They believe he is crazy and he just hurt himself (as once he came back into the cave, he was unable to see the shadows due to his eyes adjusting to the light).

Personally, I believe freewill exists over fate; the idea of having one future path seems wrong, I like the idea that we can control our path as it seems more logical as why would a god control our lives? If heaven does exist, then according to Plato, it would be a place full of perfection. Why would a god look down upon imperfections and make such a faulty world if they have all the greatness and perfection they need around them?

If there was, per say, a computer program which constantly surged electrical currents into our brain, there would have to be a point where it cannot expand more of our reality. What happens if a black out occurred and why hasn't it occurred yet? This computer program would have to be a extremely long program, or the guy controlling us must be awake mostly all the time to also control our dreams. It seems somewhat far stretched to exist.

Mind and Body

In Plato's Cave, the mind and the body work together. When the man escapes the cave, both his brain and body have to adjust to the new reality he has been shown. He needs to understand that he has been released from his lower reality to a higher one and understand it. His body has to adjust (i.e. his eye sight, how he moves his physical body, etc). Both things extremely similar to the matrix, but the mind and body are more simultaneous and together than the matrix, as they are both in the same reality at the same time.

I believe this could be possible as it would explain how we don't know everything, and why we have nothing perfect in life (i.e. a perfect drawn circle free handed, perfect handwriting, a perfect language without exceptions, etc).

When the mind and body are exposed to the new reality, they are both injured and need to adjust, which would be why others may not believe them but believe they have went insane, or became injured. People would not believe them, mostly because they aren't like before, but crazed.

Brain in a VAT Possibility

I believe the brain in a VAT could very well be possible, but probably the weakest theory in the bunch. It is quite unlikely that there is a program just for one brain to experience life that they could always experience outside of the vat. Not to mention that the whole idea of electric currents surging through the brain seems a bit far stretched as previously mentioned. Why would a person even want to make someone experience life, and quite boring lives at that?
