Top 10 Favorite Food

In my top 10 favorite foods, I chose pasta as my first choice. It was the first food I had learned to cook so I have grown fond of making it. It is easy to make and many possible ways to customize it. I never get bored eating this food so hence it is my number 1. My number 2 is egg because it tastes good and can be made many different ways as well. My favorite ways to make eggs is sunny-side up, omelets, scrambled, and boiled. Each way has a consistent taste but at the same time different texture and form, so each feels like you are eating a different meal. My number 3 is pizza because it is a classic meal that I have enjoyed since childhood. For some reason, pizza never gets old. In addition, there are many toppings in pizza that I can enjoy like pepperoni, onions, bell pepper, and others. My number 4 is bacon. Bacon has a very crispy and robust texture. In addition, it tastes good in just about any food. My 5th favorite food is muffins. I like muffins of all kinds, blueberry, raspberry, and others. Muffins have a light and sweet feeling when you sink your teeth into one of them. They taste best when right out of the oven and they are not too difficult to make. My 6th choice is Chow Mein. It’s like a staple when eating Chinese food, and it tastes good even by itself. I find it fun to wrap my fork around the noodles and grab them as one big bundle or even use chopsticks. My 7th choice is fish. However, I only really like it when it’s made the Indian way. The skin of the fish is cooked until it becomes crispy and nearly black, while the actual meat is marinated and cooked with many Indian masala spices to get a more spicy taste and brings out the umami of the fish. All the other ways to make fish have always tasted raw or not savory. My 8th favorite is okra, also known as lady’s finger. The seed pods of the Okra is a common ingredient in many Indian cuisines. It is easy to eat and with spices, tastes amazing. My 9th favorite is vegetable manchurian. The peculiar part of this meal is the gravy. The gravy has a unique taste that I can’t really describe. The sauce is mildly spicy but also savory at the same time. My 10th favorite is nachos. I like nachos because you can make it a mixture of many things like tortilla chips, guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream, or other general stuff. Also it is a great meal to have with your friends.

My Favorite Play

My favorite play is the The Crucible. The Crucible portrays both sides of humanity during the time of the Salem Witch Hunts. The main characters in this play are John Proctor, his wife Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail, and Reverend Hale. What I liked most about the play was the constant tension and suspense of the plot, which kept me hooked into the story the whole way. There were many twists within the story and it amazed me how selfish and mad people were in that story. The strict superstition, fear of witches, and the girls’ manipulation made the trials intense. It tested the limits of human sanity and the people’s willpower to be honest and good. It made me contemplate the duality of human nature. In this play, I admire John Proctor for his sense of pride and righteousness. In the end, he had a chance to save himself by admitting he had sinned even though he really didn’t. He didn’t confess because he wanted to redeem himself for his previous dishonesty with Abigail. I admire his attempt to restore his goodness and reputation.

My Literary Self

One of my best literary works was our final project in APLAC. Our final project was to interpret a short story, analyze a literary criticism pertaining to the piece, and creating my own story that is similar to the short story I analyzed. The piece I chose was called A Clean Well Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway. It is about two waiters, one young and the other old, talking about loneliness and despair versus youth and patriotism. An interesting part of this piece is that you don’t know who is saying what line. When the reader starts off, they are unsure as to who is speaking. After reading it multiple times however, it becomes clear who the characters are in the story and who is saying what. While interpreting this short story, I felt like I was solving a puzzle and I was enjoying it. Reading a literary criticism of the story enlightened many things I had never realized and made sense of some quotes in the story. For example, throughout the story we see the words “nothing” and “nada” constantly throughout the story. Through the literary criticism I learned that this reflects on the idea of materialism, an idea that Hemingway strongly believes. This project shows that I enjoy making sense out of problems and solving puzzles by myself. For me, it leads to a greater sense of understanding and enjoyment of literature. It shows how I like to learn.

Top 10 Favorite Superheroes

My top 10 favorite list of superheroes is mostly predictable. Number 1 on the list goes to Batman. He is unlike any other superhero ever created. Despite having no super power of his own, he uses his own wit, technology, and skills to combat with enemies that even heroes with superpowers have trouble dealing with. If you have ever read any of the comics, particularly the Justice League ones, Batman could essentially defeat any other hero in the League. He had created a contingency plan to defeat every single hero if they go rogue, including himself. He also isn’t as goody-two-shoes as other heroes like Superman. Bruce Wayne is more practical and realistic in his approaches while everyone strives for the ideal. However, it is his ideology that allows him to compete with supernatural characters. My number 2 favorite is Spider Man. He is an iconic character that everyone has heard of. Peter Parker is an unconventional superhero, with many comedic remarks during his fights. However, part of the appeal with Spider Man is that he is perhaps the most “human” of all the superheroes out there. He makes many mistakes and struggles with doing what is right, but always manages to get it right in the end. I made a special note of Spider Man 2099 because he is cool. 3rd on the list is Flash. He is also a memorable character and while he is often looked down simply because he can only go fast, Barry Allen has proved he can do much more than what his impression implies. 4th on the list is Green Lantern. I like Green Lantern because of his power to create anything based on his willpower. 5th on the list is Superman. When you hear the word superhero, the first image that pops up in one’s head is often Superman. He is just that iconic. I also find it interesting that Superman was initially created to inspire nationalism in US citizens and belittle Communism during the Red Scare(There was actually a character called Red Son Superman that actually promoted Communism during the time of the Soviet Union). 6th on the list is Iron Man. I actually like Tony Stark as a person rather than the actual superhero. He is smart, prickly but in a good way, and serious, but sarcastic at the same time. His interpretation in the movies have set a standard for his character in featured comic books. 7th on the list is Hulk. I started to like him simply after seeing him in the Avenger movies. 8th on the list is Hawkeye for the exact same reason as Hulk. 9th on the list is Wolverine. Logan has been through many adventures, both with the X-men and by himself. He is an icon for the X-men and after the movie The Wolverine, I have gotten a greater appreciation for him. 10th on the list is Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman has one of the most interesting character backgrounds and was a symbol of feminism when she was created.

10. My schedule nowadays starts when I wake up at 7:00 AM and go to school. After school, I go back home to finish work. Close to evening, I then have to attend a tutoring class on some days while on other days I often do volunteer work. After the session or class is over, I come back home, study, eat dinner, and then sleep. My current schedule is very different from last semester, which was the busiest I have ever been. In first semester of senior year, I would took a college course at West Valley until 5:30 PM, and then went to Robotics directly afterward so I usually never came back home until around 8:30 PM. In addition to this, I also had tutoring classes, volunteering, and college app sessions. After all this, I come back home and start on homework and studying for test. With many of these activities having conflicting times, I found myself eating more than I could chew. My junior year schedule was much like my first semester senior schedule but without the college course. My usual day as a sophomore or a freshman was just going to school and then participating in clubs and volunteering. I am happier with my new schedule because it provides me with a slower change of pace and gives me more time to do things that I initially didn’t have much time for. In addition, I can do my homework much earlier, and this allows me sleep earlier too.
7. One novel I read that changed my worldview was To Kill A Mockingbird. One of the themes that changed by view was the coexistence between good and evil within people. Atticus, a main character, chose to believe in the good and put into perspective the evil of others. Before reading this novel, I had never thought deeply of the duality of human nature before. I am sure other people and I have never thought about the other side when labeling people as good or evil. When we think about the Al Qaeda, other terrorist groups, Soviet Union, Hitler or other antagonistic figures, we solely think of them as purely evil. May of us don’t bother to delve deeper into that person’s shoes and think of the motivations for the evil they have caused. To Kill A Mockingbird has made me be more open-minded in my views of the world.
8. My greatest fear after high school is living independently in college. If left to myself, I tend to find a way to distract myself easily and not be productive. With harder classes and probably more activities, I will have to motivate myself to stay on task and manage my schedule better. I will also have to deal with constant allergies and sickness by myself. Instead of relying on my parents for medicines, I will have to bring my own and take care of myself when sick. I will also have to organize my things, especially when I live by myself. Another thing I am worried about is how to earn money for possible expenses. I might have to find a part-time job after some point and manage all my other activities. However, I am sure that if I can overcome this fear, I will be prepared for life after college, where being able to manage myself will really matter.

Poem

One of my favorite poems is “Be Glad Your Nose is on Your Face” by Jack Prelutsky. One reason why I like this poem is that it is easy to understand and delivers a clear message. The poem is not lengthy and has humorous yet disturbing imagery. This allows the reader to fully visualize what the poem says and makes clear the messages that the poem tries to convey. Through using the nose as a metaphor for something that we have in our lives, Prelutsky is able to illustrate that if our noses were in any other place it would not benefit us at all. He describes our noses as being ‘precious’ and important, and humorously places it in the most peculiar places around the body; the feet, the head and the ear. His description of having a nose in between one’s toes also evokes discomfort of having to constantly smell your feet. The subject is unlike most other poems, in which it talks about a nose rather than a setting or person. The poem also has a simple end rhyme scheme of ABAB. Despite how simple the poem looks, it actually reveals many messages. It tells us to not take things for granted and try not to change things if they are perfectly good as they are. Prelutsky tells us not to take things for granted like the location of our nose. We should be glad it is in between our eyes and not in a more bothersome place. I believe the message behind the poem is a good ideology to live by. We often tend to focus on the bad things in life and less on the things that are good or perfect. Many of us seem to have a need to change things, but Prelutsky gives examples of unintended consequences of such change when describing the problems that occur if placing our nose on our head or ear.
