Motif- A recurrent image, idea, or symbol that develops or explains a theme
The main motif in this short story would quite obviously be the necklace. The necklace proves to be a very crucial element in the story. The necklace was obviously a huge part of the story because the payment period was so long and they had to change their life in order to pay it off.

Quote: “And this life lasted ten years.“

In the short story The Necklace by Guy De Maupassant, the story focuses on Mathilde, a charming girl who was married to a clerk and suffered from poverty. They were invited to an event by the company of the husband's work. After receiving the invitation, Mathilde was frustrated, since she had nothing fancy to wear. To fix this, they bought a new dress and Mathilde borrowed a necklace from her friend Mme. Forestier. After the event, Mathilde loses the necklace she borrowed, and decides she needs to pay it back before Forestier finds out. The next few years, they work endlessly in order to pay off a new necklace. After Mme. Forestier finds out about the situation, she delivers some startling news: the necklace Mathilde had borrowed was a fake and they spent all of their money on a real necklace.

1. Oxymoron: “a suitable dress, which you could use on other occasions, something very simple?”
The oxymoron is between the words “suitable” and “simple.” Suitable in this case means pretty fancy, and simple is quite the opposite.

2. Metaphor: “-cloud of happiness,”
This metaphor compares Mathilde to a cloud.

3. Alliteration: “still young, still beautiful, still charming.“
The repetition of the consonant “s” in the word “still” is repeated in this phrase.

4. Personification: " She thought of the silent antechamber..." Giving an antechamber a human like quality of being silent, represents the personification in the quote

Forestier is a very well-off woman. She has many expensive pieces of jewelry. She was very giving when she allowed Mathilde to borrow some of it. However for the first time in the story, when Mathilde returned the necklace, she was very short and maybe even a little mean when she replied with “‘You should have returned it sooner, I might have needed it.‘“ At the end, Forestier was very worried for her friend who seemed very upset. And after being given the news about to necklace, she was very sympathetic and felt pity for her friend.

Mathilde is a very strange character who goes through many changes throughout the story. Despite being born into and even married to less fortunate people, she still has quite spoiled thoughts. She wishes to be clothed in the best cloths and decorated with the finest jewels. She is also very giddy when given anything, and then becomes very irresponsible as stated in the story (“She danced with intoxication, with passion, made drunk by pleasure, forgetting all, in the triumph of her beauty, in the glory of her success,”).
