My journey began by applying to Ubuntu Africa and Middle East chapter then progressed to Ubuntu Kenya on establishment of Ubuntu Leaders Academy here as a Trainer. My research interests focus on conflict resolution, peacebuilding and gender equality. Two years ago, I started my PhD about women's participation in peacebuilding processes in Africa. Hello all, I am Rafail Dimitriou, a final year Mathematics and Economics student at University of Warwick in UK. I found the "Active Circle", which is a platform/forum aiming to bring together all involved parties of a region in order to solve particular problems. We worked with the Municipality of Limassol in order to improve the "Sustainable Plan for Urban Mobility" for the city. I also volunteer in "Oxygono" as their web manager. Since July 2014 and until Present, I have co-founded, managed and coordinated the fundraising work of a simple informal yet effective and efficient group that works on fundraising and aid provision for charity purposes, the group is comprised of family, friends and neighborhood volunteers (about 15 people). The group mainly targets Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), widows and orphans. During the last year, we were able to raise more than $25K USD, and provide aid for more than 26 different cases (groups and individuals) across entire Iraq, including food and non-food aid materials distribution, medical treatment and surgeries provision for children and elderly people.

I applied for the Ubuntu initiative and is very happy for being accepted to attend it in order to learn from other activists across the globe, and widen my horizons on how can I serve the Iraqi community in better ways. I would like to develop my leadership skills and expertise even further to coordinate the volunteering work of our group in a better manner, and expand the group work to new levels to enable serving more people who are in need.

By attending the Ubuntu initiative, I believe I can develop solutions and alternatives to achieve better communication with the community, as well as overcoming the hardships and challenges we regularly face in our volunteering work.

Eventually, I hope I can establish a foundation or non-governmental organization to make the volunteering work of our group official and formal. And enable attracting more potential funding to establish and implement humanitarian and development projects and programs on a larger scale, these may include contributions in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Iraq. And to help mitigating the suffering of Iraqi people, and be on the vanguard of those leading the change to a better Iraq, help the country and its people to stand up again and put an end to decades of suffer and deprivation.

Finally, I cannot claim that my efforts would make miracles or fix all the problems in my country, but a thousand miles journey starts with a single step. Thus, I promise to invest my fullest in making the best use of attending the Ubuntu initiative.

Rakhshinda Ambreen is a public health professional with more than 5 years of experience in the field of research and development which includes clinical, public health, and social sector. Rakhshinda is currently working as a Program Manager of Monitoring Evaluation and Research at the Health And Nutrition Development Society (HANDS) for the past two years. During the COVID-19 lockdown, she completed 10 national and internationally funded projects. The majority of her work is on the impacts of COVID-19, children's routine immunization, polio, climate-induced disasters, the impact of locusts on food security, livelihood, gender, and health system. Expectations :

My name is Mohamed Hammami, I am an enthusiastic and very ambitious industrial engineer, graduated from the National Engineering School of Bizerte in 2018 and since that I’ve been involved in several social and community activities such as the American program M2GATE (Mena-Michigan global Action Through Entrepreneurship) where I got a certificate upon successful completion of the program from the US department of state and the University of Michigan.

Throughout the program, I have been working on tackling community issues: such as environmental setbacks and climate change, unemployment and workforce development along with healthcare issues.

Since I am on the track of wider career prospects, the UBUNTU UNITED NATIONS (UUN) Program tends to be a life-changing opportunity and inspiring one.

Without a doubt, this would be an exceptional experience when it comes to upgrading my soft skills along with leadership ones.

As a matter of fact, As a part of the UUN Program, leadership development would be quite useful for the time being when I am currently leading several initiatives to drastically press the unemployment rate specifically in marginalized areas in Tunisia.

Contributions:

Well, for starters, I have more than 2 years’ experience in a government office within the ministry of industry,
where I’ve focused on small and medium-sized businesses development and youth engagement.

My main projects have been focusing on enhancing local economic sustainability and have involved a workforce development training for local unemployed youth.

So from my perspective, I suppose these areas of support : workforce development and youth engagement would be a good fit to engage in with the U. S. community-based organization.

But then again, From my perspective, I guess the most interesting and beneficial part of the UUN program would inevitably be the cross-cultural communication that I intend to build up.

To be honest, I reckon it’s high time I got out my comfort zone and improved cross-cultural understanding by working in an American professional environment.

Also, by receiving mentorship from global civil society leaders, I hope to enhance real world problem-solving skills and design thinking skills in a way that I would be able to address and press the graduates' unemployment.

On top of that, as a community leader, after completing this one of a kind and out of this world fellowship, I will learn how to move forward with my non-profit organization goals using the UUN program resources. So, I reckon the UUN program will definitely serve to support me in providing the young emerging talents with a smoother access to the job market.

Another point is that the Ubuntu United Nations program will upgrade my leadership skills by exploiting the knowledge that I intend to gain from other community leaders. This would be quite helpful for the time being to learn how to lead a team with people from different backgrounds and how to instill in them this sense of belonging to a shared vision and common values.

In a nutshell, Through UUN Program, I will gain valuable professional experience in community work and I will bring my leadership capacity to the next level.

This resolution therefore urges “member states to consider ways of increasing inclusive representation of young people at all levels”. Enabling and Empowering Iraqi Youth

During the last decade, which represents my professional career in engineering consultancy, projects management, humanitarian emergency relief and international development projects, I was able to recognize unique insights where young professional are seldom given any supervision, leadership or management roles or positions, instead, such roles are usually played by the senior employees of older ages for having more experience. This same phenomenon spotted in the private sector also applies to the public sector and governmental jobs in Iraq.

This is a real dilemma, as enabling and empowering youth in Iraq is a must if change to the better is to happen at any seen point in the near future.

Enabling youth, building their capacity, having faith in them and giving them trust to lead is a key element to change the deteriorating conditions of our country. As many may disagree with that justifying it with the concept that younger people may be less responsible and are coming with less experience in life and work, we can all look to this matter from a different point of view. As young people are usually more open-minded, and have more tolerance in terms of adapting with different conditions, accepting new ideas and concepts.

I aspire to establish an institution that will aim to empower youth in Iraq, with special focus on young professionals, in ways that will enable them to compete in the the work market, in both public and private sector jobs, as well as leadership positions on the political sector and leading the country to a new era. Youth in Iraq have been suffering for decades, and it is them who will make the change to better Iraq happen in case they were given the suitable opportunities.
