Time

Project Description: The theme of my work investigates my fascination with the Victorian Era due to it's scientific and gender breakthroughs. In my personal research I enjoyed examining the beauty behind the telegraph, telephone, phonograph, and light bulb. Though this piece I want to create a new contraption that could exist back then.

Feedback Focus: In my project I am struggling with originality. There is so, so much steam punk artwork and I fear that my own work falls short. I'm interested in combining the process of a camera and typewriter as a way to "see through" time.

Theme Title: Abolish Fast Fashion

Project Description: My project is about finding alternatives to fast fashion. In this project, I challenged myself by not buying any new material. I limited myself to only using scrap fabric I have been collecting since 5th grade.
The base of the garment is a skirt made of fuzzy, white fabric. To add a dreamy, fairy like feel to the skirt, I layered strips of fabric, tulle, lace and ribbon

Feedback Focus: I would like to figure out different ways to layer the fabric, not just in strips. For instance, I thought of white lace going across the waist line of the skirt, and lace at the hem I don't know if different parts of the skirt going horizontally and vertically would clash. Currently everything is flowing vertically.
I also thought of large puffs of tulle on the side to make the skirt more sculptural.
Please give me your opinion on my ideas, and feel free to give your own ideas.
I am struggling with craftsmanship since I am a self taught sewer. I anyone knows how to sew, or have any advice on this skirt and sewing future garment, please give any advice.
PLEASE NOTE- the skirt does not fit around the mannequin's waist, so it's around the bust line. This is NOT a top

Theme Title: Personal Lore

Project Description (1-2 sentences):
In this piece I wanted to communicate the ‘behind the scenes’ so to speak of people’s different masks through my character, Valpressa. We use masks as protection or a way to integrate ourselves in different situations with others and ourselves every day. The scene depicts Val having fed on a man and shifting as she often does. She seeks out people to be invited to parties or gatherings so as to protect the often preyed upon women. She then shifts form and feeds and terrifies their predators enough so they might know the vulnerability and fear that their prey knows so well.
Feedback Focus (2-3 sentences): I’d like for my critique to focus on how to create a jelly-like texture to Val’s hair and how to better light the scene.

Out with the New, In with the Old

Project Description:
(*This is a continuation of my Theme Project #2*) I am using a reductive printmaking process in which lines carved into a linoleum block are the "empty" spaces and will show up white on the test and final prints. The black is where I intentionally have not carved.

This artwork depicts a rural landscape with a larger-than-life human figure and beehive boxes in the back, carved on a gray linoleum block. I'm working off of photos I took one day last year when a close friend of mine and I went to buy honey from a road-side stand in South PA. I look to her as my mother figure and she has a motif of bees in her life so I wanted to honor her and that concept in this piece. My theme of "Out with the New, In with the Old" is an intentional spin off of the saying "out with the old, in with the new". I am aiming for snapshots of life in homes, buildings, public spaces, people, etc. that I now consider nostalgic. It's about going back to old places as the person I am now and reflecting on the changes the area and I have both endured. I also want to explore changes through nature and how you can't avoid it, so it's best to embrace it.

Feedback Focus (2-3 sentences): There's not much I can change in the actual carving at this stage, but I am up for any suggestions relating to what color ink I should use (using black in the test prints). Like my last critique with this project, I'd also be curious in hearing how the imagery makes you feel as the viewer.

I like the name scraps I think it communicates what you are trying to do well. I would love to see volume added to the piece either at the sides like you said or just all around at the hip to play with shape you could do this by making a simple cage and it would be very effective. With your color pallet and medium it feels like a natural progression to play with femininity and body shape idealized or other. I agree that adding pieces going horizontal around the middle could look off but I do think you need to break up those lines a bit. What I recommend is adding more strips going vertically but sewing them on at various points instead of just the waistband. I also encourage you to solidify your color pallet through this step and make sure what is supposed to flow and be unified is doing that and what elements that are supposed to be contrasting are doing so in a way that feels intentional.

I really enjoy the texture you were able to create with the paint. I think where you are losing the mouth is because of a lack of contrast. If you are going to to the bulk of the mouth in red you need to really punch in your darks and lights. A stupid but useful tip to check that your contrast is strong is to look at it from across the room or even just squint to see if things are still blending together. There are parts of your mark making that I really enjoy like the bottom right corner and the blue and yellow line towards the bottom left. I think adding your detail through loose expressive lines and mark making is really smart and will be effective for what you are trying to communicate with your piece.

I am really interested in how this will turn out, the house looks strong and like a blueprint of an actual building. I think a good idea for the roof might be layering hay like shingles or building some old looking shingles out of tiny wood planks. Personally, I think putting the windows on top of the brick would look like a last minute idea and that you should actually carve out the windows if you can. Some things you can add would be a thin iron balcony fence (shown in photo) or an actual chunky balcony. I also think vines would look beautiful since it is meant to be old. Perhaps some fallen over and broken flower pots, mold, and a larger detail could be a tower coming from the top/side with a clock on the outside. This is very impressive and I love it so far.

I'm not that great at titles but I think since there is a hand in this piece something about touch or feeling the tiniest of details would work great with the piece. I'm not sure what colors you're going to use but I think making most of it look like a traditional realistic/slightly stylized observational drawing would be amazing with the contrast of the "mask" that is covering most of the subjects face. You could also show the connection of the hand and fabric by making the fingertips that touch the fabric either super rosy or a mix of vibrant/primary colors all together. I personally think bright yellow and some magenta with indigo would show this well. I also struggle with background, but I think a traditional background close to how Da Vinci leaves the backgrounds on his observational drawings (a bit messy and yellowing but not distracting) would pull this into real life in the correct way. Your skills are showing amazingly in this and I straight up adore it so far. I'm always so excited by your pieces and this theme is just perfect for you.

Since you said you could combine both, I think it would be so cool if the butterflies were made of smoke or evaporating at the wings like smoke. This is going to look so good!!

i do not think you should add anything, just go back in and detail the things you already have.
i would work on the lettering. i use a lot of words in my art and i always like to think about how the lettering portrays a message. i think the lettering in your work is messy, which conveys a message, but it does not look intentional enough. i would use more line weight to make it look like the person writing it on the wall put pressure on their pen/marker.
i also am not sure about all of the copyright issues with using someone else's lyrics, so maybe you could think about how you interpret the lyrics and write something you come up with based off that. sometimes in my art when i write, i think about sentence structure, meaning, and effect to create similar sentences that help push the art to the next level of creativity and originality.
another thing i would look at is the shading on the figure. since it is the focal point, you really want people to notice small details. the figure will be the main thing that people notice and talk about in your piece.
i would work on the shading of the fabric first. fabric does not only fold on the edges of the figure, so add some folds or creases that would show whether the shirt/pants are loose, tight, etc. one good tip i use for fabric is to think of every fold as a triangle that is darkest toward one angle.
another thing i am noticing that is lacking detail are the feet on the person. i am not sure if those are supposed to be shoes or socks.
i would also urge you to rely little less on line. even though outlining can be a nice addition to a piece that makes art stand out, it should not be a necessity in order to understand the piece. one thing you could do to fix this is to really push your values and add a lot of relevant shading. things should not only be shaded where the lines are, but also in less noticeable spots. a technique that i think is helpful for this skill is waiting to outline until the very end. this way, you are paying full attention to the small details of the piece.
i also think line weight is very important to focus on in such a line-driven piece. sometimes, i use a brush with built in pressure and velocity dynamics in online art to make the lines look intentional and effective.
one last thing to think about is the anatomy of someone who is laying down. i think your pose is effective for your piece, but i am questioning whether you used a reference photo. if not, i think that would be an important step, if not for this drawing then for your next. i am not sure about the hairstyle, because gravity would be pulling the hair downward when it is currently facing up (but also i know that is a common anime hairstyle and i do not know the logistics of anime hair so if that is a stylistic choice i get it).
i think the hands are one of my favorite parts about this piece. i really enjoy them because the skin tone is so on point and the shading is really effective.
i think the glowy effect around the water is really cool.
i think another part that i really like this the shadows on the floor and wall. i think they look amazing to convey the feeling of being in a small enclosed room. one thing i just noticed is that the words on the bottom follow the shadow, which is a little confusing because the words on the top look like they are written on the walls. i would adjust the perspective so it looks like they are all written on the floor/wall or none are written on the floor/wall. i think it would be more effective for all to be on them.

I think that if you used more fluid abstract shapes along with your circles it would really tie everything together. It would also be interesting to play with mixed media and layering if you added your background colors and maybe added abstract shapes cut out on colored paper. But I think a vibrant background will be a little difficult to do without drowning out the center of your piece, making the background more of the focal point. But if you plan on using gold maybe adding some gold to the piercings can help tie it all together. Your shading is lovely btw.

Attached are some examples of fluid shapes.

I didn't think this painting communicated mental health when i first looked at it. I thought this painting was confronting the topic of racism. The mask that's on the girls face appeared to me as a statement about that. If that isn't really what you're going for I think the values could be tweaked a little there to better communicate the meaning of your art. Besides that the hair is super successful with the different shades of brown in it.

Your art piece conveys your theme perfectly! I wasn’t sure what you meant while reading your theme, but it made sense once I saw the art piece. The subject of the piece looks vulnerable, closed up, and wounded. You did a good job saying that you meant without words. Talking about mental health can be extremely difficult. It is not only a taboo subject, but it can also be triggering to talk about for the person who is experiencing it. The more people like you who talk and make art about it, the easier it is to discuss.

For the background, I would recommend layering the paint to give it a more 3-D look. Using acrylic paint might be helpful since you are behind. It’ll dry faster than oil paint. To add more texture, since acrylic paint isn't thick, try mixing it with an acrylic medium. If you have the time to, oil paint would also work great for adding textures and layers. I prefer how oil paint looks because the color is richer and more pigmented. It would suit your piece well if you have the time and resources. Overall it depends on the supplies and time you have available.

If it is the moon, maybe make it more textured and less saturated. also, if it is night, maybe make the trees darker.
3rd picture:
i really enjoy the composition of this one. in the top right corner you can see some sky but there's no paint there, maybe add some color there in the sky. also i think you should include texture to the ground and the water. you should add maybe some medium sized animals in this one so maybe a fox or a deer or little fish in the water. i think shrubs and flowers would benefit here too since the ground is kind of empty
4th picture:
i like how for this one since the words and the figure bring out a more sad emotion, i like how the background and water are kinda blurred a little. maybe add some more details to the background so its not just like a green blob. i really like how the figure's hood in this one has the one ear down its really cute. the bottom is also empty in this one so maybe add some grass or rocks at the bottom so its not as plain.

I love embroidery, and it's refreshing to see someone using it in their theme project! The different stitch techniques give your project a good variety, and the strips of different patterns make it looks like a real sweater. Textures and 3-D accepts make an embroidery piece strong, and you should continue to focus on that for the background. I'm not sure what you want for the background, but I recommend finding other stitches to explore and try using them. Embroidery takes a very long time though, so sewing a found object into the background will help fill out space quickly. For example, I sewed on fake flowers to my last embroidery piece to save time.
Another thing to watch out for is the backside of your piece. If there is a lot of thread showing on the backside or if it's messy, then you end up wasting a lot of thread. I can't see the back of your piece, but I thought I'd give you a heads up.
One problem I'd like to mention is that while the art is well done so far, I don't fully understand how it relates to your theme. Your theme is creative and I haven’t seen it done before, so I’d be interested to know how it relates.

On to the critique, I do enjoy the contrasting colors and the shape of the mouth, although I would suggest placing more of the blue hues towards the top to mirror the bottom if that works with what you are trying to communicate. I also agree with Maya as contrast would be useful to help define the mouth and bring out the shape. If you added highlights to the teeth it would help them stand brighter against the dark maw of the mouth. Otherwise I think this is a beautiful piece and the shapes cascading to the mouth really add a deep and unreal feeling and I can't wait to see it's result !!

If I were to give you any advice, I would make the shadows darker and the highlights more vibrant to add that dramatic effect and boost the contrast. I think it would benefit you to think about how the light would go through the curtains, maybe painting them more translucent would make your scene more realistic and grounded. In terms of her hair, I really love the color and shape, the only thing I could think of would be to add more highlights to make it look more shiny. For your shape contrast, I would recommend incorporating some hard edges as well as soft ones you can have that variety that you're looking for.

I love the meaning behind this piece but I definitely agree with Lucians critique about the meaning getting a little lost in the piece. It also seems like a few proportions are off like the arm/hand and the the mask, it seems too long/big. I'm also not sure if the mask is just the underpainting or if that's the color you chose for the mask. I also think if the mask had more of a smile it would help convey putting on a fake smile. For the actual painting, it looks like you are thinning out the oil paint with your gamsil too much mainly on the arm. The color of your skin tones seem too purple, too red, or to yellow(I hope that makes sense) so I would look up a video on mixing skin tones or anything else you are struggling with because that usually really helps me. But overall I really love the meaning behind this piece and I think it will end up looking really great.

Hey Leroy! I really like the eye rolling out of the socket, it pushes the animal/chameleon look. I remember when you were brainstorming, you said that you wanted to have some of the skin coming off or ripping and I think that would be a really good addition still. If you want your figure to look more animalistic I would suggest you adjust your proportions to make them less human and adopt more features that are distinct to the animals you picked. For example, you could add stripes for the chameleon side or fur for the coyote side. In my opinion the color palette is a little off balance (and that could definitely be because of the way the colors look on your iPad vs what it looks like on another screen), but I would change it so you either have more saturated colors in the background or more saturated colors on the figure, because the mix of the orange with the deep red and the neon is a lot at once. In order to give the eyes some resting space I would start off with a more analogous color palette and build off of that! I actually like the lineless look but for shading I think it something patchy like a light pattern would look good (maybe scales?)

Hi Cambria! I love this piece so much, and I was I was scrolling through the padlet it really caught my eye before I even knew you were my partner. I think that something that could be done to benefit this is using much older and darker lines, also I'm having trouble figuring out what the first one is supposed to be inside the circle, I think when we go back in person I definitely love to ask you more about this piece because I really like it. as for the name I don't have any specific ideas, but I know that simpler is always easier, and gives you more freedom to move around within your subject. I hope this helps!

Ah! I love that face/head (sounds very weird), but it looks amazing. And I can't wait to see the detail in the mouth, it already looks amazing. I would say if you wanted the person to look more animal like to look at features of the two animals and maybe try to translate them in the human form. Like large scales or some fur, or even the dark spots around the mouth, nose, and eyes on coyotes. And is the red staying? Because the only real concern I would have about the red and other colors is the brighter green and the magenta; the bright blue looks fine. Those two colors just don't seem to match as well with the red as the blue does. Perhaps making the red, if possible, a bit more orange or pink, it might help the colors from clashing. I can't wait to see the finish product!

Hi Kayla! Wow this piece is really cool. I think that I love the way the light source is coming from behind the model, and I think if you bump those values and make it really extreme it will catch the eye lot. I think that I would change the color of the Mask, I don't know if I'm overthinking, but big red lips and a black background are typical to traditional black-faced, right? That's the first thing that came to my mind when I looked at this I don't know what that means about me, but definitely something for you to consider as you can decide where your viewers mind goes when they look at the piece. This could definitely still be a statement but I think after you explained it made a lot more sense. I think that along with what I was saying about the highlights if you are dissatisfied with the hair at the moment if you make the places where the light hits it really really bright it will go along with that high contrast light source that I was talking about. I hope this helps.

Like your last piece I love the lighting! And I agree with Kambria with darkening the shadows and bring up the contrast within the light areas. I would also recommend of thinking what spots does light hit and then thinking of spots where shadows do hit for help. For the jelly like hair, I would say look up images of jello cubes. Weird, I know, but they might be a large help in trying to figuring how to color the jelly like hair. And that jelly like things are often semi transparent, so the pink could be reflected behind her and a bit on her face. Jelly also tends to be very wet and slimy, so where the light hits the jelly like hair it would be really light. But overall I love this. And I enjoy that are themes are kind of similar!

I agree with Lindsey as everything is laid out already and would be too busy if anything were added. The words on the walls could be defined better and they should be different from one another in different styles and colors and shapes as graffiti often is. I also agree with Lindsey on the basis of copyright as your theme is interpretation, not reflection, so it would strengthen the communication of your theme to have the words interpret and express the song without it being the actual lyrics. For example, most songs have a particular mood to them and many words, phrases and actions are associated with them so they can be written down as the graffiti. I do like the hands and the curvature of the uppermost leg going back, although more contrast through colors could be put into the piece to differentiate shading. Clothing shifts in gravity and pull, and if you consider the two and the thickness of the garment, then the folds can be made more realistically. I also like the neutral tones of the piece and the dark blending of the face under the sink as it feels the figure is melding into shadow. The wording on the floor could also be placed differently as it does not work consistently with the direction of the floor. Overall the feeling and atmosphere of the piece clearly communicates the song.

Hi Kayla! I love where this piece is headed. I think your use of values is working so well with the colors you're using. I really think the way you created a series of pieces that all connect is so cool and original. I can see how others can perceive the art's meaning as something else. but it doesn't take away from the intended meaning so i see no problem.

My only issue is your proportions. The head seems way too big for the body. One way to fix that is match the body to the head by making the arms/shoulders bigger and longer. Also, thin out the wrist where it connects to the hand - it looks a little off with the shadow there. As for the hair, I suggest using a fan brush for the bigger, more dense areas and a thin tiny brush for the small hairs and details. You don't have to paint every single hair, just get the general shape in by blocking in the colors.

Overall, I think this piece is definitely your strongest piece this year and I can't wait to see the final results!

Hi Kambria! I really like your idea with this piece. I really like Lee's suggestion to look at artists like Da Vinci, but I also recommend just looking through Pinterest/Tumblr/Instagram/Whatever you want and going through the Inktober hashtags or just looking at intricate, detailed sketches. I think a way you can balance the values is with crosshatching or using dots (pointillism?) . I can see you may have started to do that in the second picture. One quick thing about color; I say don't use it. I think if you were to use color, only use one. monochromatic with a touch of color almost always works.

As for titles, i think keep it simple. Don't overthink it. I like "Focus" because it get's the point across without sounding pretentious haha.

Overall, you're doing great and I can't wait to see the final product!

Hi Lana!! WOW this is just...wow! You have truly outdone yourself with this one. Your colors work so well with each other. The values are amazing! That lighting...woah! I am just at a loss for words. The way you add depth to your characters is so amazing.

I think if you were to make the right (well technically left) side of her face a lot darker or more blue to show the moonlight contrasting with the candle light, that would definitely strengthen the values. For the jelly effect, hear me out...look at pictures of blue jello and you'll see SEVERE highlights. Create some chunky, harsh highlights and make the base color a flat, fluorescent color, but don't forget the shadows. They're not going to be as severe as the highlights, but it will still be effective. One last thing, don't worry about blending. For the hair, try and block in the colors rather than blending them all together. I think this is an amazing piece and I can't wait to see it all finished!

Hi Hayley! I am always blown away by your art and this piece is no exception. The way you capture color is so amazing. Your brushstrokes are amazing, I love how unintentionally intentional they feel. The only thing I would suggest changing is the background color. I feel like the muted blue is really washing the faces out and making them appear a bit gray, especially the one on the left. Maybe make the background a more vibrant color? It's not super noticeable so I think you could even keep it and get away with it. I think this is a phenomenal piece and cannot wait to see the final product!

Hello there. I think this is going really well so far. Looking at what you want for your feedback personally I think you should make it a bit more sculptural. I think it could make the “scraps” so the skirt stand out in a different way, to full get the more “artistic” view of the whole garment. Personally I think that Craftsmanship is good, mostly because the type of garment it is there is some leeway. Keep going you doing great. Also because this skirt is a bind straps of fabric sewn together, I recommend being a little more careful with where you place each fabric, because in some places the fabric overlapping is really pretty, in other places it become a bit muddy to the eye. I think you should add in more blue, because I find it so pretty, and it might help separate some of the muddy places. Welp this all I have to say, sorry I posted this so late. I’m excited to see your end result.

Hello There. So this price is turning out great so far. For the background I think, adding beading like you said, could be really cool and give the overall piece the extra element it needed. I’m confused about the flower with a French knot you are talking about, will it be in the background with the bearing, or are you comparing the two ideas? I think a flower with a french knot could also look cool, just personally I wouldn’t put all of these elements into the background. I think it might distract for the embroidered piece. Overall this is really good, for the portrait, I really like it. So I wish you luck on the rest of your piece, sorry that this critique is late. Also I’m excited to see your final project.

I think you should go the route of adding the tule on the sides, bringing it to a sculptural piece would be very interesting. I only think having different parts of the skirt doing in both directions would clash IF it's 50/50. Maybe allowing little parts to go horizontal, but not half of the skirt. I think this looks great so far. Since you said you don't have a lot of technical skill in sewing, maybe weaving strips together or braiding some of them could give more eye-catching details.

I agree with pretty much everything Lindsey said. The writing looks unintentionally messy, but it's an easy fix especially since this is a digital artwork. I like your colors and think they convey your mood perfectly although I'm wondering where your light source is. Adding a small lightbulb, one you'd see in an old basement, hanging from the ceiling would add to your dingy look. I notice that the sink is running and I think that's a great detail, although I recommend to use that to it's fullest by making the sink begin to overflow onto the floor to drive home the feelings of hopelessness and disregard. Maybe even having the figure laying in a small puddle of it, because once a person is at this point of sadness, they don't care what happens to them. Maybe they secretly want it to spill out onto them so they can feel something again? Too edgy? My bad. But I think it could add to what you're going for and have already displayed in your work.
