The sport development continuum is a way off showing what stage an individual is at in there sport. You start off at the foundation level. This is when you are a complete beginner or when you are at primary school. At this stage you are just being introduced to the sport and are learning the basics of the sport. It is likely to be fun sessions to make it more enjoyable for you. Next is the participation stage this is when you have moved onto playing or competing at club level. This is when young people begin to take a preference of a particular sport and focus on it more. they are likely to join a club and might be attending training once or twice a week. The performance stage is once the performer begins to train reguarly and start to work hard on developing skills. At this point they should be playing at a good level for club, county or regional. The elite stage is only reached by a small proportion of people who start up a sport at the foundation level. They will be at the top of there game and likely to be performing at a very high level possibly international.

The beginner stage for golf can come at any stage of life. It is not a sport that is likely to be taught at primary or introduced in the school environment. Normally people choose to just start golf as a hobby. Often it begins by people going and having some fun at the driving range hitting balls or maybe playing games on a putting green with other beginner. Golf clubs have open days which encourage beginners to have a go and try make it as fun as possible for them. The participation stage for golf will likely include people joining a golf club as a member. This means they can play as much as they want and play in competitions once the get there self a handicap. At this stage they will be playing a couple of times each week and just trying to develop a technique that works for them. Young golfers will need financial support from there parents in the first 2 stages because golf can be a costly sport with each bit of equipment costing a fair amount. The performance stage for golfers is probably once they are playing competitions regularly and practicing a lot. At this point they are likely to be a single figure handicapper and possibly playing for the county or region or just competing well in club competitions. The elite level for a golfer would be turning pro or competing as a high quality amateur. These players will likely be playing on tour and competing for large prize fees at each competition. Golf can encourage pro health at the foundation stage because people who are overweight or not too mobile can play golf and gain the exercise of walking the course. Financial support is needed in the form of a sponsorship at the elite level and the top end of the performance stage because the cost for playing in competitions all over the world is very high so they need some support. Also it is pro education at the elite and performance level because when you get to this level the importance of good etiquette and playing by the rules is very high, this can lead to a person becoming more respectful and a good sports man.

Football is a huge sport in the UK and children are introduced to the sport from an early age at many schools. it is often taught at schools in pe lessons and also lots of schools run extra curricular football sessions. The participation stage for football is when a person decides to join a club. This can promote anti crime. Especially in deprived areas young people can take part in football and playing for a club will take up a lot of there time so it will get them off the streets and reduce the chance of them being involved in crime. In the performance stage of football players will be playing for there county or maybe playing with a local professional team. At this stagethdy will be training a few times a week and they will be aware of the importance of good health. This will be pro health because they young people will be in a place where they might be able to turn pro so they will want to stay healthy by eating well and not getting into and drugs that will impact there future in the sport. At the excellence stage in football the players will most likely be earning large amounts of money if playing at a high standard such as premier league. This will mean that they are training every day and playing at least once a week. They will also get a lot of media attention so they must try and set good example for youngsters. In football many football league and premier league teams have a scheme called football in the community. This gets young people taking part in the sport as well as promoting pretty much all of the cross cutting agendas. These schemes especially focus on less wealthy people.

Boxing

The foundation stage for boxing is similar to golf, people can take the sport up at anytime in life and it is rarely taught in schools due to the nature of the activity. Children can take up the sport at any age and 8-10 is a very popular age to start but they cannot compete until they are 11. Boxing in the participation stage is very much to do with anti-crime and anti-drug. Boxing is popular in run down areas as it interest the people that you might get in these areas. It can be started by anyone and it gives these people some way of letting off sweat and maybe the stress of the life they live. It can take peoples mind off drugs or committing crimes. Also they introduce boxing in prisons as a way for prisoners to release anger and this often leads to them being better behaved in prison and avoiding a longer sentence. At the participation stage this is when young people become old enough to compete. Often regeneration can come into this stage. In run down areas that might have lots of interest in boxing grants might be given to build a new sport facility that a boxing club can be run in. This might include the boxing equipment as well as gym equipment. At this stage people will start to compete and will begin to see how they feel about the sport and whether they want to continue. At the performance stage people will start to be at a decent level of amateur boxing and will be taking parts of fairly big fights in front of crowds. At this point anti drug is really in action because people that are taking drugs will not be able to reach this stage because they will impact on performance too much. The excellence stage for a boxer is when they are an Olympic standard amateur or a professional boxer. At this point they will be taking part in fights infront of huge crowds with lots of money often involved. Pro education is involved here because although people have to put a front on before a fight in a build up there is also a lot of respect for one another in boxing so they must learn this and they should show complete respect in the ring and after the fight this includes playing fair as well as showing good etiquette after the end. In boxing there are many examples of the highest level of elite boxers that say without boxing they would probably be in jail or living on the streets, such as Anthony Joshua.

in my opinion the footbal l development continuum is the best one. This is because it is introduced in primary and secondary schools so kids get to know the sport at a very early age in life so they are more likely to play it as they grow up because they will of played from a young age. Also it helps people in deprived areas with the football in the community scheme. When professional players go and visit these schemes it can give the young people some motivation to go and work hard to copying these players as they see them as a role model. This can help young people who are not very wealthy make the start on the way to being an elite performer and making a good life for themselves. Boxing is also goof because it really focuses on regeneration in run down areas and helps the less fortunate. These are in general the people more linked to drugs and crime just due to the environment they live in so it is important to give them something else to do in order to keep them out of crime and drugs and that is exactly what the influence of boxing can do. Golf is probably the weakest because it is not introduced into schools much at all and not many people choose to just go start golf as it can be a very expensive sport to take part in. They are improving though by some clubs running a get into golf scheme to try and get more youngsters involved in the sport. Also the European Tour brought a new event in this year called Sixes which just put a different spin on golf and tried to make it more modern this attracted new people who maybe saw golf as being a boring sport as it was more aimed at younger people.

Areas for improvements

In order to improve the football development continuum they should start to run more of these schemes in wealthy parts of the country because just because they maybe have wealthy families they might not get chance to take part in the sport as much as they want to so could benefit with something like this. Other than that i think the football sports development is going in the right direction even though it is incredibly difficult for a young person to make it all the way to the elite level. To improve the boxing they could try introducing it into schools, but since they might argue it is too violent they could just do the kind of fitness drills and programs that boxers do then also teach them about the respect that is shown in the sport then prepare them and promote local boxing clubs around school. To improve the golf they need to start making it more involved in schools and not just make it more suitable for the more wealthy. They should provide clubs with junior clubs that they can give out to people. They could also promote it in jails and it could promote anti-crime and anti-drug because obviously these things are not associated with golf so making these people lay the sport could help to put them off if they are surrounded by golfers.
