Hello,

My name is Megan Dalton and I'm in the mental health and wellness program. My overall goal is to pursue my LPC license after I complete my second master's degree. I hope to learn more about trauma and it's long term affects on clients. I also want to learn about techniques and methods to treat clients who are in crisis and trauma. I hope that personally I can learn to take better care of myself and pay better attention to my own mental health.

My name is Megan Dalton I'm starting my 4th semester now with Angelo State University while pursing my second Master's in Mental Health and Wellness. My first Master's was in Guidance and Counseling. My undergraduate degree is in History from Texas State University. After I complete my second Master's I'm hoping to pursue my license as a professional counselor. My goal for this course is to learn more about trauma and how it affects people's daily lives. I'm in my third year as a high school counselor so I've seen some trauma firsthand, but being able to recoginze those signs and what I can do to help will be very important in my line of work.

Overall after exploring the websites that gave facts and statistics on mental health disorders, it was not surprising to me to learn the amount of people that exist in our world with at least one mental health disorder. I think what was really shocking was to learn that the statistics have not decreased in the last decade. I know that even after the pandemic the numbers have continued to increase.

Being a high school counselor has given me a new perspective on the meaning of trauma. When I picture adolescents experiencing trauma, I can envision a small child maybe only seven or eight years old, but to see a teenager go through the trauma of abuse or an addictive parent is horrible. It's so difficult to feel helpless to be able to help them in way you want to because you are limited in the resources that are available to you in public education.

In my future role as an LPC, I think this course will help prepare me for the various scenarios I may encounter. I'm hoping to learn more about the impact of trauma and how I can react appropiately. Sometimes I think it's hard to get past the shock value once you've heard someone's story to be able to respond in way that makes the client comfortable so they don't feel judged or rejected.

This article gives good, yet simple explainations of trauma and how it can affect us long-term. It also reminds us that we can be reminded of trauma at any given time, so it's important to be viligant and know your coping skills in dealing with trauma.

https://www.mind.org.uk/information-support/types-of-mental-health-problems/trauma/effects-of-trauma/

This assignment was long and difficult because there was so much information to go through which I suppose was the real purpose of this assignment, so we could have all the information in one place. It makes me realize how many different disorders exist, so it will be crucial for me to have a basic understanding of them all when I become an LPC.

This has been my favorite assignment so far. Mainly because we were able to choose our own documentary and I was able to watch one about true crimes. This documentary helped me to see trauma from many different perspectives and angles which is helpful for when I become an LPC.

So I know that in any educational career there will always be trainings. I understand their necessity and their purpose. To try and teach us concepts or things that we may not already know or find ways we can improve. This particular training though is not my favorite because it does not relate well to real life scenarios. Yes there are disasters and when those happen there is a crisis team that will be deployed. However, I'm not sure in my future line of work as an LPC where I will encounter theses scenarios.

My partners we great and we all worked very well together. I'm glad we were able to get ahead on this project and finish it well before the due date so we were able to focus on other components in our lives that also needed attention.

This was probably my second favorite assignment of this course. The reason being is because I felt like we really got to experience a real case scenario they we may actually encounter as LPCs. It was nice to be able to go through step by step and see how we would try "solve" each area of concern for the client.

A.1.b. Records and Documentation- To me this is one of the most imporant aspects of being an LPC. From what I've learned so far in my other courses about record keeping, it that is can be complicated and tedious, but there is a reason that records must be kept organized and updated. Clients see multiple professionals sometimes, so having all the information about a client so you can see the full picture about their history is crucial in planning for their treatment.

American Counseling Association.
