HIV is a human retrovirus containing two copies of 9,749-base ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecule as its genetic material. Among the proteins carried by retrovirus particles is an enzyme called reverse transcription, which upon infection of the cell transcribes the RNA genome into a DNA copy. The DNA copy, then integrates into a human chromosome and is maintained in a form called a pro-virus. The pro-virus acts as a template to produce copies of the HIV RNA genome. Once the pro-virus has integrated, infection is irreversible.

although there are no clinically proven ways to cure HIV, there is a case where a person had enough blood replaced from their body, and the new white blood cells fought the HIV virus. There is also a way of therapy called Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy, where one combines 3 to 4 other HIV medications to suppress new HIV particles from forming.
