A.I. Resource #1

For my first A.I. project, I chose to use Notebook LM to create a context podcast for an author I teach in my Honors English 9 course. The prompt was quite easy because I just put in an article. I had to emphasize the hosts to focus on themes of his various books, and where he was born. I think that this is a much better way for students to understand the biography of an author without having to read heavy academic work. One thing I wasn't able to get the A.I. to do is have them cite the website (https://www.nobelprize.org/prizes/literature/2017/ishiguro/biographical/). Since the name isn't in the website content it wouldn't work, so I hope they continue to refine it.

For my second A.I. artifact, I chose to do a study guide over the first chapter of Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro, the author that the A.I. podcast is about. However, this was much trickier because CoPilot (the engine I used for this) kept insisting to include information that happens in later chapters. I had to reframe several times my prompt so that it understood that I wanted just the first chapter and key details from chapter 1. Eventually, after cutting and pasting from a few different products, I was able to create a study guide for students that covers the key elements but just for chapter one.

Slides Generated with Brisk A.I.

I used Brisk A.I. and tips from the module video to create a series of a slides that review the starting themes and symbols of Never Let Me Go. I had to redirect Brisk to add reflection questions so that students could relate to the material and not just memorize the themes. I was able to get some good reflection questions and project ideas from it, such as students picking a song that they think would represent them much like how the main character has one.

Interactive: A Carer in the World of Never Let Me Go

For my interactive element, I wanted to refine the prompts I gave Claude.ai and create a choose-your-own adventure game that would make sense for students to play. Since it's a dystopian novel about just three characters, I had Claude.ai make a game as a carer in the world of the novel. I still wish it would bring in the characters and locations of the text to help students remember. So, I asked Claude to make it closer to the "source material" and it was able to do so! Now, it name-drops the location of the first part of the book which is Hailsham. I thought this was a good drill-down of prompts because I was unable to do so for the Lottery prompt earlier last week.

After generating my slideshow and honing the slides with Brisk.ai, I moved to Quizizz to create interactive questions. I liked how I had the option to create open-ended questions because it would help facilitate group discussion. It also created great before-you-read questions, but again, I had to clarify that it's only for the first few chapters and not the entire novel.
