Born in May 1924 in Nepal, Tenzing Norgay's exact birth date remains unknown. Supposedly the eleventh of thirteen children, he ran away from home twice in his teens and was once sent to Tengboche Monastery to be a monk but quickly left, feeling it wasn't for him. At the age of 19, he eventually settled in the Sherpa community. Meanwhile, in 1935, he joined his first Everest expedition as part of Eric Shipton's reconnaissance team. Unfortunately, during the early 1940s, while working as a valet in the Princely State of Chitral, his first wife died. Predictably, during the Indian Partition in 1947, he crossed India by train without a ticket with his two daughters, returning to Darjeeling. Undoubtedly dedicated, he continued working as a Sherpa on various Everest expeditions and married three times. Miraculously, in 1953, he reached the summit of Everest with Edmund Hillary.
