Every year I travel to the state of Washington and go to a place called Harstine Island. This island is connected by a bridge and is very green. There is not a direction where you could look and you could not see green. Traveling here once a year really lets me relieve myself and gets me away from the big cities and off my phone more often which is very good for me once in a while. I also get to see a lot more wildlife on the island than I would see in California. Some of these animals include deers and foxes. In my picture, you can see me and my siblings in front of our tiny previously bought house which is on the island. Alex is a hitchhiking traveler with a very limited and small amount of supplies such as his only food product being rice. Jim is just an ordinary man who happen to meet the hitchhiker Alex and agreed to drop him off at his location which was the stampede trail. While Jim takes Alex to his location they talk for a little and throughout them talking Alex states that he didn't even notify his family about the traveling that he's going to do. When reaching the destination Jim supposed that Alex was just a normal traveler and thought he would be "OK" in the wilderness. Jim thought Alex would do his best to stay alive.  Little did Jim know, Alex would later die that year. 

Analysis: I am kind of mad at Alex for being so careless with going into the wilderness so unprepared. I hope that Alex is smart with his choices and that he will turn around if he does not have enough stuff to keep going. I am just hopeful that Alex makes it home alive.

This bus was located along the Stampede Trail which was the same trail that Alex decided to go on. Once upon finding the bus they were looking for they notice a foul odor coming from it and a note that had S.O.S on it. Little did they know it was to have Alex's dead body on it. Near the dead body they find other items such as a diary, the note, but no identification. Alex's corpse had been there for at least a couple days to weeks and was found to be decomposed because of starvation.

Analysis: I am very disheartened to find out that Alex had died. I was kind of expecting this due to the reason that he came so unprepared and that this chapter started out with grimness. I really just want to know why he did this to himself and why he chose to go out that way.

Analysis: I am saddened that Wayne got sent to jail but I am excited to see where Alex goes afterward. I am very interested in where Alex's trip takes him. I am also wondering if Alex will every go back to Wayne not to just see him but maybe even work for him again

Upon doing this he almost dies due to the raging heat but is found by some boaters who help him get to his destination. While still continuing to hitchhike, Alex meets a guy named crazy Ernie who hires him but never pays Alex for his work, so he leaves. Alex also bumps into these people named Bob and Jan who call themselves rubber tramps who also offer him a ride which he takes. After this Alex struggles to get to the pacific ocean through using a canoe through a canal. After this Alex ends up in Vegas living in the streets with bums and tramps but still believes he is living his best life. 

Analysis: It is very fun to read about the adventures of what Alex is doing. I do feel that he should be a little more cautious on what he is doing though some of the things are highly dangerous.

He decides to get a job at a McDonald's to make some money also because it was that winter which was not prime traveling time. Alex was all over traveling in the spring rather than winter. After getting bossed around too much for not wearing socks and a multitude of other things Alex decides to quit his job at McDonald's and continue traveling. He decides to meet back up with Jan and Bob and stay with them for a while.  After staying with them for a while, Alex decides to set back out to travel. When announcing that he would be leaving to Jan and Bob they are very saddened especially Jan. She offers to give Alex more clothes and money but, due to Alex's way of life he does not accept.

Analysis: I am excited to see that Alex is going back on his adventure. I am still curious to find out why he is the way he is though. Such statements as not wearing socks really have me confused.

After that Ron and Alex start to meet more often and become pretty close. Due to Alex not really enjoying close relationships he ends up leaving Ron but comes back for a little shortly after. When Alex comes back to Ron he only stays at his house for a short time as he need to go back to work for Wayne. In Ron and Alex's last car ride together Ron asks Alex if he could adopt him but due to Alex's ways he pushes it off and says maybe after I'm back from Alaska. Ron finally drops Alex off and he carries on his adventure. A couple months later Ron receives a letter from Alex which basically states for Ron to ditch his house and live a new, full life and travel more often. After this Ron puts most of his belongings in storage and moves to the campsite that Alex was staying at. One day when Ron was going back into town where he picks up 2 hitchhikers and then find out about Alex's death through them. Upon Ron hearing this he goes into a very depressive state and decides to turn back to whiskey in attempt to end his life. 

Analysis: This chapter is truly heartbreaking to me. The fact that Ron never got to see Alex again really leaves a hole in my heart. Also the way Ron turns back to alcohol and the chapter ending like that really does hurt. I hope Ron got to see more of the world in his last years of living. This was definitely a very sad chapter.

After Alex's set date to stay with Wayne is over he begins to go to Alaska. Wayne even offers Alex to stay longer but Alex refuses. As Wayne says when Alex has his mind made up on something he will stay true to it. One of Alex's last moments with Wayne is him saying bye to everyone. Alex says bye to Wayne's girlfriend while crying like almost knowing his trip would turn to be fatal. Finally, Wayne drops off Alex at interstate 94 and Alex continues his adventure.

Analysis: It sucks this will probably be the last time that Alex sees Wayne. I am still excited to see what Alex is going to do next. It also seems that we will finally get to see him reach his destination, Alaska.

All 3 people had similar lives for the most part. None of them grew up in bad situations and also had good futures for the most part. All 3 of them also had different ways of thinking then other people and most were very connected to nature. Sadly all stories end in death that were all self inflicted. One being due to stabbing of the heart, another due to gunshot, and the last one being from disappearance. All these deaths happen had also happen after failures in there ways of thinking. These stories comparing to Alex's travels, as his journey would also prove to be fatal after being not prepared. Also just like Alex, these people were very committed to their beliefs. Overall, all these deaths seems to be oddly similar. 

Analysis: It is very weird to me all deaths end the same way and have similar stories to them. It makes me wonder if Alex really did mean to die. He may of not meant to die the way he did but I believe he eventually had planed to go out someway.

Detectives and authorities are very unaware of the identity of the body they found dead within the bus on the stampede trail. One of the first people to find out that the dead body's identity was Alex was Jim. He had heard about the death in the news and with all the details given he knew for a fact it was Alex. Another person who was one of the first to find out the body was Alex was Wayne. Wayne had coincidentally heard about the death in the AM radio and also knew it had to of been Alex. Another person who had also heard about the tragedy in Alaska was Sam who was a half brother to Alex. He had also known it was Alex after all the details and was gonna have to break the news to his dad and Billie about the death of their child.  

Analysis: It is very interesting on how they had to find who the dead body was. It is also very cool but sad to see how everyone found out about the death of Alex. I hope Alex's dad and mom reaction won't be to heartbreaking, although I know it will be very sad.

Some say he may of drowned, others say he fell to his death, and some even say he was murdered.  It could've really been anything as all his people around him said that Everett was a very strange man.

Analysis: It is very weird to see how Alex is this very non-ordinary person but has many people just like him. I am still very curious to know how Everett died. I also wonder if Alex was inspired or motivated about the story's of Everett.

Walter who was Chris's father had worked very hard for his position within his jobs which made a decent amount of money to provide for his family. Chris had a pretty normal childhood for the most part. Throughout Chris's childhood he found out the things he loved to do such as be outside. One of the things he loved to do outside was running, as he viewed it as an intensely spiritual exercise. Another was hiking as we see Chris loved hiking with his grandfather even as a very young child. He also like to keep certain items close to him such as a guitar which he was gifted to as a child. Within Chris's mind we also see that Chris is a fighter and that he takes life's inequalities to heart.

Analysis: It is very interesting to see Chris's childhood and how he was raised. It is so weird to me that him being raised like this led him to taking off from his parents just to never see them again. I do also think the fights Chris's parents had may of had a deep affect on him.

We find out that Chris has had trips before that have been near death for him before before his final trip to Alaska. One of these trips being in the Mojave desert. Chris also finds out about his dad basically living 2 lives with 2 different families which really starts to ruin his relations with his parents even more. After Chris finds out about his dad basically lying to him for years and years he starts to build this anger and resentment for him. He also starts building this outrage which may of been the reason of him leaving to Alaska without him telling his parents or anyone in fact. In Chris's last years of college he really separates from his parents even more by not even calling his parents and not even writing to them. One night while Chris is on his Alaska trip, his mom suddenly wakes up one night and hears the words "help me" within her head with tear rolling down her face. 

Analysis: It really is heartbreaking to hear that Chris's dad has been lying to their family the whole time. Though I will say it is definitely crazy how he could've pulled that off for however long he did it. I does also suck to see how this chapter ends which really gets to me.

Carine even believes that Chris would've not many dumb things risking his life and taking so many chances if he took his dog with him on his trip, which he wanted to do but was denied.  The mystery is solved and people finally figure out that the body found on the bus is Chris. Word gets out to Carine's husband and he sadly has to break the news. After hearing about this she starts going depressed for weeks and weeks even losing weight because she stops eating. Afterwards Carine ends up flying to Anchorage to pick up Chris's cremated remains where they even spelled the name wrong on the plastic box where his ashes were in. Billie was also still very hurt and depressed over the death of her son and doesn't really understand why Chris did the things he did. 

Analysis: It sucks to hear about the reaction of Carine to her brother's death. I knew they were super close so I couldn't imagine how Carine felt in that situation. I'm glad she was the one to get the remains of Chris.

He drives most of the way to Alaska and then boats the rest. He ends up in a small town near the mountain and stays with a woman named Kai. He ends up spending the night at her house and ventures off the next day and hitchhikes to the mountain. Jon starts his climb trailing up the mountain and making good progress in the good weather. After a while of climbing the mountain for a while he gets stuck and is unable to continue forward any longer. From here he knew his trip was over and he would need to descend back down.

Analysis: It is crazy to me that he would just quit his job to go climb a mountain. I'm sure he is not as much as a risk taker as Chris as he probably was a bit more smart with his money than Chris. It does suck he wasn't able to get to the top of the mountain though.

He begins to think about his relation with his dad and how terrible it was. He was hated by his father for the decisions he made in his life and not living up to his expectations. All of this began to fuel John's rage. After years and years John began to get rid of this rage and by after at least 2 decades it was fully gone. He started to think about why his father could hate him and why he is kind of in the right for hating him. John was basically given this good life and basically repaid by "chopping it down" as he said. Though these thoughts did happen after John seeing his dad in a horrible state being held with a lot of pain with him even attempting suicide because of it. Thinking of all these events gave John motivation and helped him climb the Devil's Thumb another time. This time he ultimately fails again but him failing the climb again lead him to do it another time. This time he succeeds at getting to the top of Devil's Thumb. Afterwards he goes back down and end up going back into town where he finds that no one really cares that he did it. He ends up back in Boulder end goes back to his ordinary life. At the end he explains his reasons for thinking that Chris did not intentionally try to end his life when going to Alaska. 

Analysis: It is awesome to see John achieve his goal of climbing the thumb. I also do side with him on his reasoning about Chris's death. I do not believe Chris tried to intentionally tried to kill himself.

Jim was the last person to ever talk to Alex before his death in which hew was the one who dropped him off at his requested location. When in the woods Alex begins to hike and survive off the wild. He sets up an abandoned bus as base camp and begins living primitive. He hunts and kills game such as squirrel, porcupine, and moose. He also explores all around to see some of Alaska's great beauties with his best tool of transportation bring just simply walking. He really enjoys this lifestyle even though it is so different then his usual life. He is finally alone and away from society. After a couple months Alex decides he wants to turn back and head back home but is unable to do so being that there was a river blocking his path in which his lackluster swimming skills did not help. After this he finds himself to feel lonely and scared. This is one of the many great disasters that would occur in his Alaska journey.

Analysis: I am excited to see that Alex finally made it to Alaska. To find out what he did there and how he survived was truly amazing. I couldn't imagine trying to live basically with my own two hands.

They are there to see what challenges Chris faced and retracing his steps. One of Chris's biggest disasters was not being able to cross the river. Through retracing Chris's steps Jon and his group find a cable car which was very close to where Chris was and would've easily gotten Chris to his to the other side of the river. They were able to find all these things that would've saved Chris only because they had a map which was one of many pieces of equipment that Chris should've brought but did not. Though Chris did make some really poor choices, people still applaud him for what he was able to do out in the wilderness even though it being so difficult. Jon ends up reaching the bus which Chris stayed at. Upon going inside he sees many of his belonging including boots, silverware, and many more items. Jon and his group end up camping out the night and eat moose meat for dinner.

Analysis: It is crazy that Chris's stuff was still there. I would've thought they would've cleaned out the bus of his belongings and maybe given them to his relatives. It is also crazy to think about if Chris would've brought a map with him, we maybe not be reading this book right now.

We see all of the notes Chris left on his last days he spent in the wilderness. You can truly see his agonizing pain when starving, within these writings he made. Jon was able to narrow down the ways Chris may have starved and all had to do with what Chris ate. His final conclusion was that he ate some poisonous seeds. These seeds would've killed his body due to him not having much body fat and an immune system that couldn't fight back the toxins. After eating these seeds Chris's writings begin to look more and more desperate. He cries for help in his writings as he is dying in crucial pain. He ends up dying on his 112th day within the wilderness. Chris did write that he did die in peace as he wrote, "I HAVE HAD A HAPPY LIFE AND THANK THE LORD, GOODBYE AND MAY GOD BLESS ALL!". Even after his death people still have many questions about him. He was even accused by Alaskans of trashing a cabin not to far from his camp area. People also question why didn't Chris cry for help in better ways, such as even start a fire. People are still very confused about the mysterious man Chris J McCandless.

Analysis: I am very distraught about this ending. I want to ask many more questions about everything but, I guess that can't really happen when talking about a person who is passed away. It is also good to hear that Chris died in peace even though he was in so much pain.

Billies decides to leave a first aid kit with basic essentials and even Chris's old bible that he had as a kid. Walt decides to install a memorial into the bus's door. After a while they leave through the helicopter and see the bus get smaller and smaller then appear gone as the fly away.

Analysis: This chapter is very comforting to see that Chris's parents weren't deeply saddened and they were more calm. I'm glad they got so see where Chris died and got to see more on maybe why he did what he did.

Analysis: It is surprising that Jon is so committed about Chris's death even 20 years after. I would never do something of that caliber for so long. I can respect Jon for being committed though, he has made a fortune for what he has done and deserves it.

The thought of being able to buy anything I want and help people around me pleases me so much and makes me want it more. I have looked up to many wealthy people such as the most infamous Elon Musk. To me Elon Musk is a very big inspiration, the fact that he turned nothing to something and became rich is very fascinating to me. His net worth is higher than some countries which I find astonishing.

With a lot of money I can do a lot of things. With an abundance of money I would make sure everyone related to me lives very nice. They wouldn't have to budget or live frugal ever again. I would also make sure my parents would never have to work a day in there life again. I would also help my community and give back to people who need it whether it's someone working very hard to achieve their goal but doesn't have the funds to do so or even just a simple man who has to live out on the streets because they can't afford a house. There are certain things I find both bad and good about him. Things he has done in his life brings me to think this way and why I think so neutral of him. 

The Good: I like that he is a goal chaser, and a very extreme one. No matter what he was set stone on his dream of going to Alaska. He found many very close friends during his trip to Alaska and still has his mind set on Alaska because he wants to achieve his goal so bad. I also like how he differentiates from society and how he stands out. The events such as throwing all his belongings away such as his money and even his very special car make his different which I find very interesting. The way he didn't listen to societal means either I also found weird but in an interesting and good way. The events such as not wanting to wear socks at McDonald's when working there and not wanting to accept any offerings from other people had me very intrigued when reading about. I found him to be very unique.

The Bad: There are about as many things I find bad about Chris that I find also good about him. The main thing I find terrible about him is how he treats people. He can spend weeks and weeks with people and then leave the next day like they're a random person. Instances like him just leaving his parents to go to Alaska with no sign makes me feel this way. It's like he doesn't think about the bad when making his mostly awful decisions. For instance Chris more than likely had his parents up all night and day looking for a clue to find him, probably even costing them lots of money. Chris's parents basically gave him what some others would call a "perfect life" and just throws it away. Another instance is when he meets Ron. The way he leaves Ron with a deep hole in his heart was truly heartbreaking and sucked to read. The fact that Ron was willing to adopt Chris at the age of 80 and Chris basically just says, lets talk about it later, just doesn't fit right with me. I respect Chris but the way he was with people at times just didn't seem right.

Overall, Chris was an imperfect person just like all people in the world. I will probably never be like him or want to be but, I still can deeply respect him for what he achieved in his life.
