     Wilder begins Act 3 in a cemetery, filled with the gravestones of many of the characters in Acts 1 & 2. Wilder introduces Sam Craig who has just returned to Grover's Corners for his cousin's funeral. Many of the deceased converse with one another and the reader finds out from Mrs. Gibbs that the funeral is for Emily Webb. This style of writing creates tension and suspense as it foreshadows Emily's death. The author's aim is to give the reader a sense of dread as they come to the realization that Emily has died. This contributes to the morbidness of the final act and sets the mood. Act 3 is set in a cemetery in 1913. Wilder directs the actors to speak in a very matter-of fact manner, without any sentimentality or sadness. He seems to be try to establish a more calm, slow mood, in contrast to the sad tone one would normally expect from a funeral scene. Emily finds out that she can re-live her memories from her life, but the other dead warn her not to. Mrs. Gibbs say to Emily "when you've been her longer, you'll see that our life here is to forger all that, and think only of what's ahead." The longer the people have been dead, the less emotion they show and the less attached  they are to their lives and memories. Mrs. Gibbs, who died a few years before Emily, shows very little emotion and has trouble remembering details of her life. Simon died by committing suicide by hanging himself in his attic. He chose music notes before committing suicide. The message Stimson tired to convey to his pass life how never fit in with the small town life, as his epitaph he choose music notes, which got in the Boston Newspaper. This shows that he might have had connections outside of Grover town.

The amount of money is significant because Mrs.Gibbs probably sold the high top. Emily spent the money on the a new long cement drinking fountain for the stock.
