The transpoemations project: Digital storytelling, contemporary poetry, and refugee boys - Emert, T. (2013) by Dana Di Loreto

Discussion Question: What is one example of an arts-based educational intervention you have facilitated in your classroom that incorporated video and digital storytelling to explore multiculturalism and identity? What were some of the intended goals of the intervention, as well as overall outcomes. What computer programs did you use? Were there any surprises or challenges? If you have not facilitated this, what is an arts-based activity you could see yourself facilitating based on this reading?

This year for Black History Month, my class made photo essays about influential African American and African Canadian people using Google Slides. The students were asked to find photos that symbolized their writing. Based on the reading, I think it would be interesting to try this same activity with MovieMaker or iMovie.

The biggest challenge to this activity was finding images to represent their ideas and the emotions in their writing. However, I think it was a good challenge because it made them think more critically about their writing.
-Danielle Title

Idea - Digital collage

I have never facilitated an arts-based activity using digital or video media before. But I have seen a classroom create a collage of photos using their camera phones. The activity involves walking around your block and taking pictures of normal objects that mean something to you and why. I would modify this to ask the students to take pictures of the objects that mean something to them. I would ask them to take pictures that represent their primary and secondary needs, then we would get unique collages of the different foods people might eat and/or different representations of family. Afterwards, students can present their collages using a slideshow and talk about what the photos mean for them. This can open up discussions about family and what resources we need to survive. I imagine this activity could be connected to geography units or social studies. Christine Ngo

This year in one of my placements my students used the iPads and netbooks that were available to them to research and put themselves in the shoes of an immigrant from their country of choice. The students really had an opportunity to step into the shoes of an individual in history and deepen their knowledge of a culture and of an identity. Prior to this assignment, students were introduced each to various immigrant groups and individuals from around the world through videos on the SmartBoard. The outcomes were great as students were sharing and learning more and more about cultural backgrounds, reasons for leaving their homes and how their new life in Canada was as well as the challenges they faced. -Rosamaria Pagani

Infographic - video

Typically, I would have my students create infographics of specific French speaking cultures around the world. I believe a good exercise would be to extend this to the various cultures within the greater French culture. For example, students can research and speak to the history of the arrival of displaced Chinese citizens in France fleeing war in the mid 1900s; or the presence of people from various African countries to various French speaking countries in Europe. My goal would be to spark discussion among the students and speak to the current state of affairs in today’s global village where people are still fleeing areas of the world and forced to relocate to countries like Canada because of war, famine or both. Some of these students end up in classes that we teach. In the future, I could give students the option of creating a cultural infographic with pictures and illustrations in a poster, or producing a video which contains similar information.
Kirt

UN Development Goals

An arts-based activity I used to look at multiculturalism was when my students created paper slides for one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. This activity had the students looking at the goals (poverty, gender equality, no discrimination, or education) and creating a series of pictures and images. The students then recorded themselves speaking and used the images to explain the goal. The intended goal was that they learned about life in other countries and the UN's goals and the outcome was that students had a better understanding of the rights/freedoms they experience in Canada and what we can do to help. The only program used was the video recorder on our class iPads (though some students used the Green Screen app). It was interesting to see the process through (research, design, script-writing, practice, record, present), but the biggest challenge was that some videos were too large to upload or share and took too long over our school's WiFi.

After reading this posed question, I recall a teaching experience of mine where I was teaching grade 7 English. I did a unit of poetry with my students where students first learned about the various poetic devices which eventually turned into educating them on the concept of different types of poetry. For this part of the unit, I specifically focused on Protest Poetry. I presented a variety of diverse poems that strongly related to multiculturalism, racism, poverty and identity. Through the discovery of poetry and from reading poems, I had my students find the meaning behind these texts and the hidden messages by "reading between the lines". My students were able to identify the various hidden messages and were able to critically analyze them. For a final project, I had my students write and craft their own protest poem in which they had to reflect on a chosen topic related to a social justice issue. Students were required to write their poem in written form and then transform their written protest poem into a spoken word movie with their voices over the track. Some students wrote about topics such as racism, refugees, poverty, education inequality, war, etc. Incredible results came from this experience as I had students reflect and self-assess their experience engaging with this project. I am really happy that I had the opportunity to teach this subject as my intended goal of having students recognize such issues through the medium of poetry came to life in the form of digital media.

When I taught grade 2, I did a project with my students based on their interests of knowing more about the world, the globe, continents, oceans and cultures. So I spent a month doing cross-curricular project, where students learned about all of the things mentioned above. We started with a research and looking for readings that related to the topics they wanted to learn.Students developed art by individually creating a globe, and collaboratively preparing a presentation for the school and the parents. We created a video with the development and process of the entire project, they learned songs and poems from the topics, they created a T-shirt with their own design of the part they were going to expose and got to present it at the end of the month to their parents.
Through this activity, students learned more about traditions, cultures and how things work in other parts of the world.
