It is when musical notes are put together in a particular sequence to produce a song. Ben Ratliff in his book "Every Song Ever" describes it as something that doesn't necessarily have to be sequential or symmetrical to one another. He starts out by going into depth into repetitiveness and uses the example of repetitive motion and how that translates to the conclusion of a piece of work through each motion at a time. A musical example from his playlist that he discusses is "Spiritual" by Chicago gospel bandleader, Donald Lawrence. The way the composer gives his choir instructions , homilies, and lyric prompts as the piece progresses on is the "link" or connection that makes up the song.
