Though most of his success is attributed to painting, fewer than 24 paintings are actually attributed to him actually exist. He took a lot of interest in sculpting and inventing in addition to his artistic painting abilities.

With a few patronage exceptions, Leonardo Da Vinci almost exclusively painted realistic images of humans. His goal was to paint people in such a way that their intentions, beliefs, and personalities come to life. Leonardo Da Vinci once said this: “A good painter has two chief objects to paint - Man and the intention of his soul. The former is easy, the latter hard, for it must be expressed by gestures and movements of the limbs.”

One of the reasons Leonardo Da Vinci is so revered is because he was the definition of a renaissance man. He was everything that was greatly admired in a man plus more. In addition to being a painter, sculptor, and inventor Leonardo was also an architect, military engineer, draftsmen, and master of anatomy. Much of renaissance anatomy came from Leonardo Da Vinci’s sketches and dissections of the human body. Also Da Vinci is credited with the first idea of a “Military Tank”.

The Mona Lisa is regarded by most as the most recognizable work of art in the world. Most of its allure comes from the mystery surrounding the subject however most art historians agree that the woman being painted is Lisa del Giocondo, the wife of a wealthy Florentine silk merchant. Leonardo never truly finished this work as it was his "final attempt at perfection" and kept coming back to it time and time again.

Perhaps Leonardo's most ambitious project was his commission to build a 16ft Bronze Statue to honor Francesco Sforza. He worked on it on and off for 12 years before it was destroyed by French Forces in Milan. Still yet, the mere commissioning of this project proves Da Vinci's well known skill for sculpting.
