As I explained in the report, one of my least favorite things about the genre is the lyrics, the "accents" of the singers, and the instrumentation used in the various country songs out there. Even living in a very Southern state, country is a genre I believe that I will never like. The song I used in my report was Sheryl Crow's "Shotgun." I chose this song because it is on the bearable spectrum of country music, in my opinion. Many of Crow's songs use pop influences, which is a genre I am more open to listening to. A song in the country genre that epitomizes my dislike for the genre is Jason Aldean's "Big Green Tractor." Even the title of the song makes me turn away in disgust. No disrespect to people who love country music, but this song and genre just is not for me. Aldean's song speaks about the stereotypical "country" activities, such as riding on a tractor on a farm with a girl on his lap. Although I am aware that these songs hold meaning, it is hard to read because the true meaning is buried underneath these lyrics. This song's meaning, unlike many country songs that I have listened to, actually has a pretty obvious meaning. The lyrics consist of Crow taking the driver's seat in a car, which symbolizes taking control of her life and not letting bad circumstances determine her happiness. These are also symbols of the Southern culture and how country music is an homage and appreciation for the culture of the Southern United States. While these are common symbols of the genre, many modern country singers are ditching these and taking on their own images, some even resembling pop stars.
