Some fathers simply may not be able or want to engage with schools or teachers. With a volunteer group of fathers from the school, we can still expose children without fathers to positive paternal role models. They could volunteer in classrooms, help patrol hallways during passing hours, or help with after-school activities/groups/clubs.

We could offer classes to fathers who may not know how to be involved. Perhaps they were taught that it was a woman's place. Perhaps they feel a distance because they are separated from their family. With a workshop, we could show these men that they are not alone, that they are wanted, and how they can be involved at a hands-on level.

Starting with a meeting at the school, we could help fathers to organize a meeting time outside of school, or provide a room in which they can regularly discuss various matters. They might share tips on how to help their children at home, come up with community action plans to address issues at school, etc.

It is crucial that the entire school is on board with increasing parental engagement . There should be one meeting prior to school starting to address the ways we can all contribute to a welcoming school environment. We should then have at least quarterly check-ins to discuss progress we've made, and what improvements can be implemented.

A welcome letter addressed to all caregivers would help to start a conversation. I would include details about myself and my life so that they might get an idea of the sort of person that their children will be spending time with throughout the day. I would provide multiple ways that I could be contacted to ensure open and easy communication. Along with the welcome letter I would send home a student contract, that would clearly lay out the expectations and hopes I have for my classroom. It would also be very clear about rules and procedures, so that hopefully we are all on the same page from the beginning of the year,

Meeting with parents in person helps to establish trust and partnerships. I would try to host and open house at the beginning of the school year. I would communicate to parents that I will make myself available whenever possible for in-person meetings before or after school. Everyone's schedules are different so I will have to remain flexible. One thing I plan to do is offer Zoom meetings to parents who might not be able to attend in person for some reason.

We know through research that one way to encourage desired behaviors is reward them with positive reinforcements. Something that could be done is to create community partners with local businesses who offer coupons or discounts for parents who volunteer their time. We could also ask those same community partners to donate items that could be raffled off to parents who volunteer.
