Some historical components of the founding of Mexico include not only the indigenous beginnings of Mexico but primarily when Mexico becomes a republic in 1821, winning the war of independence from Spain. Still, many conflicts follow, including wars with France and U.S., as well as internal conflict. Above is the first flag of Mexico!

Humanities and Mexican American Humanities

Humanities helps us understand people, their culture, traditions, religions, and way of life. The humanities focus on how humans think, feels, and connect with one another. Mexican American humanities is simply the study of Mexican Americans and their culture, history, art, and experiences. With this we better understand Mexican Americans have shaped the U.S. and how they expressed their struggles, identity, and the pride of their heritage. Mexican American humanities is about learning and celebrating the experiences of Mexican Americans through creativity and traditions.

Mexican American Symbols

Culture symbols of Mexican Americans vary among religious figures, people who inspired social movements, and art. La Virgen de Guadalupe, is the religious image of the Virgin Mary, a symbol of faith and cultural pride. She can also represent the spiritual strength and resistance to oppression. I am all too familiar with la Virgen de Guadalupe because she is everywhere in my grandmas house. Farmworker imagery of César Chávez and Dolores Huerta was also a big symbol to Mexican Americans representing the struggle for workers rights and their contributions to the US economy. The Chicano movement is another social rights movement that helped show political activism, empowerment and identity through their fight to equality during the 1960s-70s. Murals and street art is public artwork, showing another way of telling stories, honoring heritage, and claiming space in society (both figuratively and literally). All of these symbols connect Mexican Americans to their roots and celebrate and express their struggles and identities in the US. These symbols bring pride and inspiration of progress amogn the Mexican American community.

Mexican Americans celebrate a combination of both Mexican traditions and American holidays, and also unique cultural experiences highlighting family, faith, pride, and heritage. Día de los Muertos commemorates the life and memory of our loved ones who have passed. Families build ofrendas and celebrate the life of those they’ve lost. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the battle of Puebla and is celebrated in the US with music, food, and parades. Another famous tradition is a Mexican American girls Quinceañera which celebrates the transition into womanhood and is celebrated with mass at church, food, dancing, and other traditions like the last doll, the shoe change, and father daughter dance.
