These 4 classified bonds include molecular, ionic, covalent, and metallic. Each having their unique traits and visual aesthetic. For example, metallic bonded crystals often conduct heat and electricity as well as its own distinguishable shine. Ionic crystals are often brittle and shatter with ease due to like charges (positive near positive/negative near negative) being in relatively close quarters hence forcing them to repel each other and thus separates relatively quickly with only a minimal amount of stress.

Source: https://www.reference.com/science/many-types-crystals-6dc564c0a17034a2#

It is relatively safe to assume that the crystal merchant did not have an expensive inventory of crystal due to his initial financial situation during Santiago's first encounter. The Crystal Merchant's inventory perhaps consisted of primarily crystal glass, as crystal glass was relatively abundant since the duo were able to serve plenty of tea in crystal glass. However, later on as the sales skyrocketed, by nature of business, the merchant would have certainly expanded his inventory to far more luxurious and lucrative crystals.

Santiago's first encounter with the merchant was due to his desperate need for food. His first few chores was to clean the crystal glass in the merchant's shop. However, after working with the merchant for a substantial time, Santiago started to provide the merchant with marketing ideas to boost the man's business. Initially, the merchant refused Santiago's ideas due to his reluctance to change. However, he inevitably succumbed to Santiago's cause and thus granted permission to serve customers tea in crystal glass and strategically position display cases containing crystal on the path passing the hill. This resulted with the Crystal Merchant's business to escalate dramatically. With this in mind, a long time back it was stated that the merchant gave the boy a very high percentage of income due to the expected low revenues the business usually acquires. This allowed Santiago to amass a major source of income and funded the journey to Egypt. Before departing, the Merchant thanked Santiago tremendously and stated that Santiago was an indeed an omen, a gift to the Merchant.

These structures are extraordinarily complex and are nearly impossible to described with only words. The names of these structures are just as fantastic to pronounce: amorphous, isometric, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal, monoclinic, and triclinic. If you are curious about these shapes, I highly advise that you check out the source.

Source: http://www.webmineral.com/crystall.shtml#.W427iPZFzxA
