Khaled Asaad clearly was willing to put his life on the line in order to preserve heritage, and history. But more importantly to fight against hate. I think Khaled saw what he was protecting as more than just artifacts and history, but as symbols of hope for the cultures being persecuted by ISIS. I believe that the preservation of cultural heritage and its importance is subjective. I personally dont think that very much is worth a human life. But to someone that dedicated their entire life to it, it may mean something different to them. A major example within the US of how far people will take the preservation of "history" were the Charlottesville, Virginia protests, riots and attacks in retaliation to the General Robert Lee statue being removed from the cities center following the Charleston church attack.

I believe that Al-Asaad was willing to give his life for the cultural heritage of Palmyra because it was his life time work. He spent forty years studying Palmyra, the heritage of course was beautiful and important but what it meant to him was greater than the objects. I believe he must have thought that something so significant could not fall into the wrong hands. I think that if someone spend almost their whole life studying heritage and it became something they loved and cared about deeply then it is justified that they want to die for the culture.

He is a man who is willing to sacrifice himself for what he believes in, Palmyra. Palmyra is a very important historical theatre. That alone should be reasoning why he is willing to sacrifice himself.

Personally, Cultural heritage is not important to the point where I die. But everyone is different and to him it seems that it holds that much importance to him so yes, it is worth dying for, but it all depends on the person. example of dying for your heritage. of the top of my head i cannot come up with one because its more about race rather than heritage.

In my opinion I think that ones life is far greater then any object, but of course I did not spend my life studying archeology. An equivalent example could be when climate changed protesters cemented there hands to the road blocking cars from passing. Like Asaad they are putting there life on the line to protect what they love.

I believe Khaled Al-Asaad was willing to give his life because he was invested in the cultural heritage of the people from Palmrya. Being a head archaeologist he has definitely formed a connection to the pieces of history he has discovered over the years. He knows the stories of the people who owned these pieces and knows losing the artifacts ends their legacies. In some cases I think the preservation of cultural heritage can be worth someones life. If by losing one life it can save the memories of thousands then it becomes worth it. One example of this I got to witness over the summer at my friends lake house in Maine. All of the houses surrounding the lake were built on native land that many lost their lives to keep in hopes of passing down to future generations.

Khaled al-Asaad was willing to give his life away for the cultural heritage of Palmyra because to him, that culture meant more to him then his own life. He had spent the vast majority of his life studying the Palmyra culture, so for it to be striped away for him would cause al-Assad to lose his purpose. He dreaded the thought of a reality without the artifacts and history of the Palmyra, and that was enough to push him to the point where he would die for them. The importance of culture heritage differs from person to person. Some people, as shown by al-Asaad, would go to the most extreme lengths to protect a culture, while other people may not be willing to go even close to as far as al-Asaad. For some, passing down different cultural traditions if enough, but for others, they may demand the restoration or construction of historical buildings and museums.

I think that Khaled saw the artifacts that he was protecting as more than that he saw it as his life work and as a symbol of the strength of his people. I think he also saw protecting the artifacts as a way to protest against the cruel treatment of his people. I do think cultural heritage is worth your life because it makes up a huge part of who you are And the way you see life. Cultural heritage is what adds color to your life and makes you unique.

Khaled Al-Asaad was a man dedicated to the preservation of his culture for his entire life. His career, his livelihood, and his personal well being was tied to the history of Syria, he gave his life to protect it from militants set on bringing down what he had spent so long trying to preserve. Asaad was a proud member of his culture, and went to great lengths to protect what many may consider a crown jewel of it, Palmyra. A theatre that stood for thousands of years before those who killed Asaad ended up destroying it. It was a symbol of his proud culture, and the very idea of culture itself.

Khaled Al- Asaad was someone who was doing anything to give his whole life and dedication for his culture. He spent his whole life studying and learning about his culture Palmyra. He protected it and fought for it. He felt that he had a huge responsibility of his culture because he was the head of it and wanted to protect his people. I believe that culture heritage is worth your life because it shows you a different part that others don’t see. Culture heritage has its own beliefs and each person values their tradition.

The pursuit of education is something people, in my opinion, should always be interested. They could possibly want to learn a skill that interests them or they need for a job they could be doing, experience something they may have missed out on earlier in life due to one reason or another, or just generally learn for the sake of learning and enrichment. They may be interested in the Heritages of Change Exhibition due to the cultural value of the project, and how culture may be a leading orce in their own learning. They may read practical volumes concerning activities used in daily life, or more abstract readings that may be used for enrichment or introspection.

I believe Khaled al-Asaad was willing to give his life because Palmyra's history was a part of who he was, and the preservation of its cultural history was more important to him than his own life. Could it have been because he dedicated several years of his life as an archaeologist to uncover the vast secrets of the ancient city he was born in? Yes. But simultaneously, I believe that in addition to holding his ground for a greater cause, he was also making a statement, since he was willing to endure torture and eventually lose his life rather than to disclose the location of historical artifacts.

Now, in any given scenario, I don't think people should have to die in order to protect or preserve a part of their cultural history since all walks of life should be entitled to knowing their history, who they are and the importance of where they're from. In cases such as this however, where Khaled's death might've actually united the people of Palmyra due to his undying patriotism, I don't ever think feats such as this should only be achievable through a sacrifice.

Palmyra was very important in historical itself. and that's the main reason why he had to sacrifice himself to placed himself on the preserving Palmyra's cultural legacy considering it worth more than his life. I think it is important to preserve cultural heritage, which all of us have inherited from our parents, for the benefit of each other and sometimes may put at risk different places that are making changes.

Possible Proposal ideas, in my mind, have to do with my heritage as an Italian American. This is absolutely influenced by the Italian class I'm taking this semester, but it's also been a big part of my life. My great great grandfather came to America from a small town outside of Naples, and once here at the age of 15 worked his way into being a landlord or several decently sized parcels of land. I'm curious on where the land is, why it isn't in my family anymore, and how he even came into possession of it considering his humble background. I'm also curious about Italian American culture in general, how it differs from its beginnings and how certain things have changed within it overtime. For example, Italian Americans often call red sauce "gravy", while traditional Italians still refer to it as "sauce" and even see the act of calling it "gravy" as a slight to Italian culture. I'm not sure yet how to entirely incorporate this into an exhibition, but I don't think I have to know yet since this is only the brainstorming stages.

Though I’m not sure if this theme completely fits the heritage of change exhibition project. I wanted to focus on american culture, specifically the subculture within that being veterans. My opinion is Veterans are important people that have positively impacted our nation yet they lack the benefits,education,opportunities,and outlets they deserve. Taking a deeper look into why over one third of americas homless population are veterans and the history thats lead to the mistreatment or even neglect of our veterans in society. (If this doesnt really fit the themes stated in the reading I understand and am willing to switch paths)

After completing the reading I’m not completely sure this idea matches the heritage of change exhibition promps perfectly, so i am willing to change it if not. My exhibition would include American culture and the subculture veterans. Specifically sharing my opinion on how veterans are valuable members of the community who have contributed to society yet, they haven’t been given the proper education,opportunities,benefits,and even welcome home. Throughout my essay I will look to dive into why a whopping third of our homeless population in America are veterans and the history and current challenges behind the difficulties of re-assimilating into civilian life.

As I continue to reach the book, I'm still indecisive because I have 2 objectives in mind but not sure if it connects with the book too well. I was thinking to talk about immigrants, I feel like immigrants aren't really cared about, talked about or anything but these people come to have a better life and some get rejected, some are working under the table. I usually see a certain amount of people from the same country working here in the US and they're hard workers. I feel like no one cares for them or even tries to help them everyone thinks they're these bad people and horrible human beings which is really sad and I feel like they should get more help, and be heard, no matter the culture.

So far I've been interested in doing a piece about indigenous people. The art has always been something I've found interesting, like looking at the pieces from the Vogue article, but I would love to do something more about where these people live today and how they keep their culture alive. Over the summer I visited a lake where all the houses around were family homes passed on from generations of native people. This is definitely something I think is worth looking into.

I think that ALFA members will be interested in the heritages of change exhibit because they might represent things that they've learned about in the past or are currently learning about. I think that ALFA members would like to read about information that is relevant to our generation so that they can get a better grasp on concepts that they've heard about in books or in the news but have not yet fully grasped.

For my proposal, I was considering using immigration as my theme, since I have a decent understanding of the topic and would like to further my analysis on it. Immigration within the United States has been the topic of much conversation as of recent, and it's history within this country has been a very complicated one. I think the plans this country has for immigrants in the future can very well change at any given moment, and could determine the trajectory for not just the citizens this country, but the lives of others even outside of it.

Relevancy is very important to look for when trying to find a source because if a source doesn't contain at least some of the detailed information you need, you won't be able to get much out of it. It is also important to know whether or not your source is a credible one. Cause it ensures that my source is reliable and for it to be true, giving me a solid base to build upon in order to raise the overall credibility of my work. Relevancy is also very important as well when trying to find a source if a source doesn't contain at least some of the detailed information I need.

While looking for a fantasy league source, you need to look for reliability, date, and relevance of the source. a source must be from a reliable author in order to verify that the information presented is true and dependable. Date is another major factor in your source as older sources may be disproven / missing important information. And obviously a source needs to be relevant to your topic

In the article they use explanations of what nsc does and goals directly from members of the group. Covering reasonings behind the group; such as. "battling a Jewish controlled system deliberately plotting for the extinction of white race" Also providing a direct quote from the groups website claiming “The Nationalist Social Club is a pro-white, street-oriented fraternity dedicated to raising authentic resistance to the enemies of our people in the New England area. This takes the form of networking, training, activism, outreach, and above all, ACTION.” Towards the end of the article we are also given a recent and actively updated list of events perpetrated by NSC-131

Credibility

While the Anti Defamation League is a non profit aimed at battling hate and racism. This article is specifically for the background and "mission" behind NSC-131. Giving us unbiased information on the group mainly directly from group members or websites/chats affiliated with the group. Unfortunately there isn't much info on who specifically wrote the article, But the ADL is a highly accredited organization with years of experience in covering extremist groups.

Why?

The NSC-131 is a fairly new group (forming only within the last 5 years) So finding sources for it is going to prove to be somewhat difficult. But this article is a great focal point for my project, giving me tons of background info, history and recent events on the group. While also giving me citations and references directly from the group creating.

What makes a source worthy of being included in my fantasy league is how relevant it is to my topic and how many questions the source is able to answer for me in my writing or research. When looking for a source you should be looking at the date it was published to make sure that it is relevant, look at the authors background to make sure that they are credible and have background knowledge on the topic at hand, and lastly; a good source should be easy to fact check and rely upon.

Citation

Chander, Rakesh, et al. "Addressing the mental health concerns of migrant workers during the COVID-19 pandemic: An experiential account." International Journal of Social Psychiatry, vol. 67, no. 7, 2020, pp. 826-829.

Summary

In the article, the authors assess the mental health concerns of migrant workers in India during the global pandemic of COVID-19. In West India, most citizens are vulnerable, forcing them to migrate annually for employment opportunities. With the restrictions to contain the spread of the virus, the migrant workers faced harsh economic times, further exacerbating the negative impacts on their mental health. In the study conducted in Bengaluru city, the authors provide an account of the experiences of mental health professionals dealing with the psychosocial distress faced by the migrants. A visit to migrant camps revealed that the migrants were satisfied with the "prompt arrangement of residence for shelter with a regular supply of food and water” (827). The authors concluded that despite the interventions, the majority of the migrant workers were still in distress because of uncertainty in the future, resulting in an unprecedented pandemic.

Credibility

The article is credible because the authors are professionals in the mental health field and have written numerous articles on the topic. Rakesh Chander is a psychiatrist by profession. Chander is a graduate of All India Institute of Medical Sciences in India. Presently, Chander is at the United States (US) Department of Correctional Services, where he treats patients with mental health problems resulting from alcohol addiction. As a psychiatrist, Chander has extensive knowledge of mental health, having written various articles on mental health and psychology. The other authors who have also contributed to the article are professionals in the mental health field. The article was published in 2020, which means it is current and presents the most up-to-date information on mental health.

Analysis

The source is helpful because it provides relevant information on mental health—the article helps understand why mental health problems are prevalent among vulnerable communities. The source presented the concerns of the migrant workers after the interventions. Most workers were still distressed because of uncertainty about the future. The source provides insight into the fact that mental health interventions should be long-term to meet the needs of vulnerable groups in society effectively.

Citation

"More states extend health coverage to immigrants even as issue inflames." December 29,2023 by Phil Galewitz

Summary-

The author is talking about the health care coverage in the United States for immigrants, because it is one of the biggest issues not talked about he takes into consideration. He basically states how the president needs to change the law and make exceptions for those immigrants who come here for better health and cant even get better because if you don't have health insurance you can't get help unless you wanna pay for it. He also stated that in 2025 maybe there will be programs at least for children so that they can have the ability to have some type of help since immigrants don't have anything. Other people are fighting for it as well.

Credibility-

Phil Galewitz Phil Galewitz, Senior Correspondent, covers Medicaid, Medicare, long-term care, hospitals, and various state health issues. He has covered the health beat for more than two decades. He is a former board member of the Association of Health Care Journalists.

Usefulness-

This source is useful because we need people like this author to talk about immigrants, show the care for them. We need to help each other and immigrants come here for help so yes I think immigrants should have some type of health coverage, and health care should help people in need.

To better put this into perspective, my grandmother was a native Puerto Rican, and a child of 15. She was raised to farm life, and the environment she lived in was completely different than that of the one she lives in now. As a result of a most of my family moving to America, my grandmother was forced to learn a new language and get accustomed to a culture that was not of her own. It was as a result of these efforts that I exist today, and I have her to thank for her bravery.

Over the summer of 20203, I was able to visit the campgrounds that surround this lake. Once inhabited by the Passamaquoddy Tribe the land surrounding Upper Chain Lake is now part of a trust granted to many Maine natives in the hope of giving back the culture that was taken away from them.

Interview Topic 1: Mental Health Amongst Veterans

Angle: Artifacts Story/Perspective

My first artifact will be an interview of me asking veterans from the Fitchburg/Leominster/Gardner area for their perspective on veterans' mental health after serving. It’s crucial to utilize this unique perspective because it provides us with a personal in-depth look into how mental health affects everyday veterans from our local area. Mental health is a struggle for all kinds of veterans regardless of where they live, which is why there are organizations like the VA that supply offices such as the Fitchburg VA clinic. The VA or Veterans Affairs is a government branch tasked with providing veterans with the necessary resources to live a comfortable life after serving. Throughout this interview, it will be important for me to ask their perspective on the VA and what it has done/is doing to help veterans locally and nationally. All of these veterans regardless of the lives they lived after serving have been affected by the benefits/lack thereof in their day-to-day. It is important to note all battles with mental health are different and though everyone may have different mental health issues, every veteran should have an accessible resource to help with mental health. Veterans also can inform us about what has caused or affected the change in their mental health to give us more first-person knowledge on why veterans struggle with it. While the VA has a clear purpose after the interview we can decide how well it is doing in our local communities by seeing its effects on the members. The official VA government website states “If you’re struggling with issues like PTSD, depression, grief, anger or trauma, we offer counseling and other support. All VA healthcare facilities offer same-day help. You may qualify even without enrolling in VA health care.”. Note an extensive list of mental health issues are listed to have help offered yet, we still see only a decrease in the condition of veterans’ mental health conditions over the years. We must find out why that is whether it is the VA’s lack of benefits, lack of accessibility, or if it is a choice of the veterans to not seek their help. Poor mental health among veterans is contributing to many veterans living challenged lives, whether it leads to poverty and homelessness, job and food insecurity, difficulties in society, and even living tormented by the tragedies they had to enure when serving their country.

Memorable Providences Relating to Witchcrafts and Possessions serves as an early example of the spread of false information, and we can see similarities between the book and modern-day news outlets. These news outlets may not be convincing people to believe in witchcraft, but they sometimes take advantage of our cognitive heuristics when it comes to feeding us information that can be biased. During the Salem witch trials, many people of Salem didn’t question Cotton Mathers’ findings and convictions. Similar things are happening today, as people tend to passively listen to the news and expect it to be all trustworthy information. Unfortunately, this is sometimes not the case. Take for example something that happened recently during a Trump rally, where Trump said that immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country”. This is language that can be very dangerous if it falls on unquestioning ears. Trump never backed this claim up with anything, but he is proclaiming that he will start the largest deportation program in US history if he is elected (Gibson). We can see Trump doing things similarly to Mathers and the other witch hunters. They say things to scare the public and then proclaim to go to extreme lengths to quell their fears.

Efforts have been made to revive marginalized cultural legacies, with literature highlighting museums' role in promoting anti-racism by representing marginalized voices (Kisha, Heritage of Change). The proposed exhibition aims to challenge dominant narratives, particularly regarding Black people, promoting inclusivity and equity aligned with broader social justice pursuits (Kisha, Heritage of Change). Examples like the life-size Greek artifact "Life Imitates Art" demonstrate how museums can challenge prejudices and amplify marginalized voices (Bernal). The exhibit is seen as a means to break stereotypes and contribute to societal cohesion, resonating strongly with ALFA members (Yancey, 153). Ultimately, it represents a way for museums to engage in anti-racist activity and foster a more inclusive society, sparking critical dialogue and raising awareness about the importance of preserving cultural heritage for societal healing and transformation.

Citation;

Claire Cain Miller,Sarah Kliff, and Larry Buchanan, “Childbirth is deadlier for Black families even when they’re rich, expansive study finds” (2023) The New York Times produced by Larry Buchanon and Shannon Lin.

Summary;

The article discusses the astounding fact that most people assume that the richest mothers baby will survive and this is a fact; but this is a fact that is void when the mother is Black. Research has repeatedly shown that Black mothers and babies have the worst childbirth outcomes in the United States. But what makes this study different is that it analyzes this fact not only using race but also income and socioeconomic standing. A study like this shun’s all doubt from people who may argue that Black mothers dying from childbirth is an isolated incident. The article also states that babies born to the richest 20 percent of families are the least healthy. They are more likely to be born premature and at a low birth weight, two key risk factors for medical complications early in life. This is because their mothers are more likely to be older and to have twins. But even with these early risk factors, these babies are the most likely to survive both their first month and first year of life. Rich and poor mothers are equally likely to have high-risk pregnancies, since high risk pregnancies don’t discriminate; but the poor mothers were three times as likely to die — even within the same hospitals.

Credibility;

Claire Cain Miller is a correspondent for the New York Times she often writes about gender, families, the future of the workforce and about the American healthcare system. She’s most interested in uncovering the ways it falls short for patients; she's worked as a journalist for her entire professional career starting at Washington University in St. Louis.

Analysis;

This article is useful because it highlights the fact that the infant mortality rate for Black mothers is parallel to the infant mortality rate for white mothers even when money is not a factor. This article highlights the fact that it is a racial and bias issue rather than a money issue.

I chose to talk about the Latin migration and my family ring that is passed down from female to female. The migration of Hispanics has played a crucial part in the shift in demographics as people relocate here in search of more promising futures, stable finances, and a greater standard of living that benefit them and the people they love. Personal items hold great meaning and provide a link between individuals and their heritage and roots during this time of moving. A family ring is such precious item that is handed down through the generations and is a physical reminder of ancestry. These rings are meaningful to the Latinx immigrants as they represent the bond and toughness in the face of migration challenges. The rings became a family jewel that goes beyond regular value and gets worn as a symbol of endurance and sense of hope for the future of our family.

Every presentation board was very detailed and thoroughly researched. I especially liked how before you even entered Fitchburg State representatives part of the student government association were doing research of their own. They were determining factors of our university they thought separated it from other schools such as how close our community is and how we felt the school enhanced our career. Students were asked to put happy face stickers next to the categories they most felt represented our unique community.

The artifact that I have chosen to discuss is the Jim Crow museum; I took a virtual tour of the museum and noticed that not only were black people portrayed in a negative light; But a specific emphasis was placed on black women. Who were portrayed as subhuman with exaggerated features. The same attitude that was applied to the making of these racist images is the same imagery that is often applied to Black women when giving birth or in situations of extreme pain. The black women portrayed in these racist images were portrayed as dramatic and as caricatures of your every day african-American person. The racist imagery found throughout the jim crow museum perfectly embodies the mindset surrounding black women that has survived through the ages just on a lesser scale.Not only do you have black women portrayed in a negative light but you also have black children portrayed as insignificant beings who somehow mean less than a white child would. In the Jim Crow museum there are multiple depictions of caricatures of Black children with the word beware on them or even one image where a Black baby is drinking ink instead of formula from his bottle. The intentional negative depiction Of african American women and children reinforces negative stereotypes that are often fatal when dealing with law enforcement or in this case childbirth.

I thought that Kai fay's presentation was very interesting not only was it like a puzzle but it was also cool how every group had a different meaning or view on what was provided in the box. I also liked how Kai pointed out that even in archaeology; when archaeologists don't know something they often say that it is a ritual item but if we show it to someone else it could be a piece of art or even a hair pin. This shows that we all have different ideas and views and that there is no one "correct" way to look at things.

I think that as a writer, I learned how to incorporate better sources into my work in order to ensure that I am using credible information in whatever it is that I am doing. I also earned to take my time when gathering pieces to a whole, and to consider the different perspective of the people that I am writing to. It's also important to consider how we learned to focus on one aspect of our work at a time rather than trying to get everything together at once, so being able to ensure that each piece was solid was a huge help and improved the quality of my writing by alot.

I learned a great deal on a topic I probably would never have been educated on if it were not for this course. I thoroughly enjoyed being able to exercise writing about something that interested and learning techniques in order to do that. I found that the artifact process was super interesting and not something I have necessarily thought about in other writings. It is really neat to be able to separate out a topic like that and dive deeper into different topics that still pertain to your original topic, it just is a really way at educating yourself further.
