We was part of the ethnic group Hutu which overran the previous president which then put him into power. He was Rwanda's dictator and had pro Hutu views on everything. But in 1990, the Tutsi people started a civil war to overthrow the government. In 1993 there was a peace agreement signed to help relieve the fighting. Unfortunately, his plane was shot down in 1994 and his death is one of the wide known causes for the Rwandan genocide. The talk about signing this treaty was talked about in 1992 but took awhile for an agreement to be reached. The idea covered in the arusha accords was that Rwanda would have a broad-based transitional government. This meant that all different political parties would be represented instead of fighting over who has control. While Rwanda tried to serve justice to those involved it was hard to do so on such a large scale. This is when the gacaca courts come into play. These courts were designed to would help assist in arresting the people involved in this genocide. Unforunatly a guard took over the radio station and would not allow Uwilingiyimana to speak on the radio. Later soldiers surrounded where she was staying and made them surrender whatever they had. They later ended up killing Uwilingiyimana and her husband. This wasn't the only higher up they planed on killing. They had a list of individuals they went out and looked for that same night.
