1)	Do you think wood composite materials can bring development to furniture industry? Point out any relevant answers to justify it. (10 marks) Yes because composite as defined as any combination of two or more materials ,in any form, and for any use such as plywood , LVL, OSB , particle board , Glulam, MDF etc. Durability , composite wood product provides solid, uniform strength that is highly resistant to warping, cracking and splitting. Versatility, products are engineered to meet specific customer; size. Workability, can be easily shaped and moulded into almost other design. Quality, the smooth surface of wood composite.Value, low cost than solid wood, that means get a product that provides superior performance at an adorable price.2)	Describe the properties of medium density fiberboard (MDF) (5 marks)Medium-density fiberboard, commonly abbreviated as MDF, is a versatile construction medium and can be used in almost every project as a substitute for real lumber. Unlike real lumber, fiberboard is less likely to warp. Manufactured fiberboard products are commonly cut in the same sizes as real lumber and can be found in most home improvement stores. There are many types of MDF, including products that are moisture resistant and fire retardant. The material is substantially heavier than regular lumber due to its composition.MDF is especially prone to crushing or marring if not handled properly. It is generally made with a hard surface but a soft inner core, which sometimes breaks or chips when installing a nail or screw.Moisture can cause the material to blister or curl.MDF produces a significant amount of dust when it is cut or sanded.Good structural purposes and can easily laminated using overlays.

ANSWER:

1) Yes. This is because wood composite are more cheaper than sawn timber and today the wood composite design are more 'up to date'. the concept is modern , simple and nice. It is also easily to handle and more lighter than sawn timber product. Wood composite materials products are versatile and available in a wide variety of thicknesses, sizes, grades, and exposure durability classifications, making the products ideal for use in unlimited construction, industrial and home project application. It is good as structural purposes and can easily laminated using overlays also popular to be use as carcass inside the upholstered sofa of furniture. In present market, especially in kitchen cabinet, plywood always combined with MDF. The wood composite materials also use in wide range of application such as for furniture (book cabinet, drawer, shoe rack). for structural purposes(bridge, builiding, LVL).

2) MDF is strong, stiff and heavy.
-Moisture properties- ( MDF will respond to changes in relative humidity of the surrounding air.
-Production wise: precision planeness, dimensionally stabilized equal strength in two axes; sufficient strength.
-commonly for backing when rigidity and light-weight structure need.example:chair, cofffe table, wardrobe.
- MDF has an even density throughout and is smooth on both sides. MDF is denser than plywood and particleboard.
- MDF is primarily used for internal use applications, in part due to its poor moisture resistance.
- It is made up of separated fibres, but can be used as a building material similar in application to plywood.
- Stable dimensions (won't expand or contract like wood)
-MDF can shapes well.

Waalaikumussalam...

ANSWER:

1) Yes because wood composites was need for low-cost. It is because wood composites are use from wood waste, at least it can minimize the applicable of wood waste. Second, the price of the material was cheaper than solid wood. We can recycle or use many types of residues and we know that the low cost of raw material, the low cost product made. Third, it is easily to decorate the surface of materials. It is because wood composites was use the laminated timber once it is easy to cut and to be updated follow the trends. Then, the production of making the composite was wise like precision on planeness. This is because in order to make composite material, hot press and cold press will be used on the surface of the material and the size will be set according to the desired.

2) Medium density fiberboard, known as MDF. The properties of MDF from mechanical like dimensional stability. MDF retains its original shape as it is a laminated timber material different from the original nature of the solid wood. Second, MDF also is a good screw-holding characteristics. Third, on its physical properties, it have a good surface which enables high quality finishing. It it because the occurrence of hot press and cold press process to make the surfaces of the material is uniformly. Then, MDF commonly for backing when rigidity and light weight structure need. For example, table tops, wardrobes, drawer front. MDF also a material with high density. A high density materials have a high degree of protection in a product.

3)Mind map...(NURUL FAKIRA BINTI ABDUL SANI
