Quand Janie est jeune, sa grand-mère l'installe avec un homme nommé Logan Killicks, qui devient le premier mari de Janie. Logan traite Janie comme une enfant et s'attend à ce qu'elle lui obéisse docilement. Mais Janie a une forte volonté et refuse. Quand Logan menace de tuer Janie, elle s'enfuit avec Joe Starks, un homme beau et charmant.

Joe et Janie déménagent à Eatonville, en Floride, qui a été la première ville entièrement noire d'Amérique et l'endroit où Zora Neale Hurston a passé la majeure partie de son enfance. Janie pense qu'elle pourrait être heureuse pour la première fois. Mais Joe, comme Logan, a des définitions très rigides des rôles de genre et s'attend à ce que Janie le soutienne et ne discute pas avec lui. Janie est trop franc pour cela, et elle et Joe ont une relation difficile. Joe meurt finalement, laissant Janie indépendante.

Après la mort de Joe, Janie tombe amoureuse d'un homme nommé Tea Cake. Ils se marient et déménagent dans les Everglades de Floride. Janie a enfin l'amour dont elle rêvait, et elle et Tea Cake sont heureuses, malgré le fait qu'ils sont tous les deux parfois jaloux l'un de l'autre. Lorsqu'un ouragan frappe, cependant, les choses prennent une tournure plus sombre. Un chien enragé attaque Janie, et quand il essaie de la sauver, Tea Cake se fait mordre par le chien et contracte la rage. En conséquence, il commence à devenir fou, et il essaie finalement de tirer sur Janie. Elle le tue en état de légitime défense et est jugé pour meurtre.

Lors du procès, les amis noirs de Tea Cake se présentent pour condamner Janie, mais un groupe de femmes blanches de la ville se présente pour la défendre. Le jury entièrement blanc la libère et elle retourne à Eatonville, où elle rencontre son amie Phoeby et raconte l'histoire de sa vie.
