I have many question but those will be answered with time and experience. My principal came out to meet the new people and that is remarkable!

I seem to be given the right person at the right time in my life and this is absolutely one of those times! I speak with Mrs. Miller almost every day, she is available whenever I have any questions. Mrs. Miller is on my 8th grade team and right down the hallway from me. So we say Good morning every day, we have team meetings once a week and this is usually when I address anything that I have questions about.

I like how uniform this system is.
What I meant was that the system, Power Schools, makes it very easy to keep track of grading and as a teacher I know the Mastery Connect program is awesome to keep me aligned to the right standard and it helps to write questions, or takes that task off of my plate all together. The grading procedures do affect grading in my classroom because I am required to enter 2 grades a week, so I must keep this in mind while developing lesson plans. I strive to grade in the most unbiased way.

The parents of my students have been very supportive. I had one parent wondering why her daughter got an office referral from me and when I talked to her on the phone about how her daughter just got up and walked out of class. I explained that it was a safety issue and blowing one's nose is not an emergency that requires leaving without permission, the mother understood and relaxed a bit. This family is my neighbor which is a little weird. I document every communication with parents and with 118 students it can be tough getting those phone calls in.

Another example of parent communication for me is through email. I get emails from parents frequently and I like that form of communication for small things such as last week a student's mother asked if her son left his glasses in my classroom . For things like that email is perfect. But for more serious matters email is not my prefered way of communicating with parents.

MEASURABLE GOALS - SMART
MY goals are measurable by how specific they are. An example would be 1. Be in your seat and finish the Warm-Up by the time I finish attendance (3-4 minutes).
This goal is very attainable for every students. It is realistic because all they have to do is come into cless, get out their Chromebook, go to our Google Classroom and I have a Google form waiting for them each morning with the correct date, and they must type the question and their answer from a set of choices (multiple choice) and hit the turn in button and they are finished. We then move into regular classwork. The question in the warm-up is from the previous day's lesson

SHINING with my plan!
I feel the activities I choose for students to complete is when I am at my best. I try to picture in my mind how it will go when students get into it and sometimes it goes exactly as planned and other times it goes better than the plan. Then there are the times when I feel like it goes off the rails! :) I learn the most from those times

QUESTIONS RIGHT NOW?
Somedays I question if it gets easier. Other days I question how easy the day went! Mixed reactions but no real questions

Connections:
I try to connect lessons to what students are doing every day. In this lesson we talked about American culture and what people, including my students do, wear, and so many other things contribute or are because of the culture we live in.

Activities:
I like activities where students get to create something that I can hang up. Students like to see their work hanging in the hallway. Students like to be creative and by adding a specific rubric I can turn creativity into a formal assessment.

It was like growing up in the TV show Happy Days without the Fonz.
I love Sumter because it is so diverse. Some of my students are world travelers because their parents are stationed at Shaw and they have lived in Germany, Hawaii, Alaska, and a host of other places. It is incredible that they take change with a grain of salt and they move forward with anything new. I love change and learning what I can from the kids I teach about their life experiences and what they want from life. Each story is spectacularly different and amazing

This is an example of student work from earlier this school year. Students were asked to create some form of brochure or poster that would advertise South Carolina as a great place to settle in the "New World" Students were asked to work in groups of three and create a pamphlet, poster, or booklet with as many reasons they could think of why someone would find South Carolina attractive. This is one group's work. I thought it was pretty amazing what these three students came up with as reasons why. I think this reinforced their depth of knowledge and it shows critical thinking skills. (Students were offered a giant tub of supplies to use and had to use critical thinking skills to be unique in their presentation)

Just now

The class was very informative and I met many teachers from across the state. We learned many techniques to increase instructional time and deal less with student issues and disruptions. The best plan, I learned, is to have an "over-planned" day. Never run out of things for students to do! My management style is to keep students busy and thinking and I try to stay organized by using Google Classroom as much as I possibly can to upload assignments and turn in buttons to click. This also helps students be organized and have their work turned in on time.

I unfortunately do not use MAP testing but I do use Mastery Connect and I think it is really great. I disagree with others that it is difficult to use. I use it for formative tests and for my SLO this year. I did not like the format of the assessment that was available, being a new teacher I was not familiar with cut off dates and such so the format of my SLO was not something I would have normally chosen. I use the reports in Mastery Connect to see what I may need to re-teach. I like the graphs and the way you can compare things between my classes. I also like that I can pin resources from other teachers and be able to get ideas from these things. Our curriculum director at EMS is awesome and she is so helpful, so shout out to Mrs. Sharon Cheek For the training she provided. We have not used Enrich and I wish I had known about it when I was preparing my SLO. I was probably told but there was so much information I will most definitely change that over the Spring Break!
