Worked independently from 1477 to 1481. Then in 1482 he moved to Milan to work in service of the City’s Duke. He spent 17 years in Milan until 1499 where the Ludovico Sforza lost his power. He was a highly esteemed and respected as the Duke’s artist and engineer. Also worked as a hydraulic and mechanical engineer. During his time in Milan he completed 6 works:

  • The Last Supper
  • Ceiling Painting for the Sala delle Asse in the Milan Castello Sforzesco
  • Portrait of a Musician

His best known pieces were the Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. Leonardo da Vinci worked for two years as a weapons engineer for Cesare Borgia the son of Pope Alexander VI in Florence. His work included new weapons designs and maps that are clear precursors of modern cartography. He was ahead of his time:
  • He had notebooks full of sketches and ideas
  • He drew sketches of firearms, birds in flight, and flying machines
  • Also had plans for a helicopter, submarine, and tank

He was friends with the Pope Leo X's brother Giuliano de’ Medici. Giuliano supplied Leonardo with a place to stay at the Vatican and gave him money every month. In 1516, he left Italy for good to work in France for Francis I. For the last 3 years of his life, he held the title of "First painter, architect, and engineer to the King". Leonardo died in 1519 at the Cloux and was buried in the palace church of Saint-Florentin.
