This project is a series of pictures taken through the eyes of a baseball player. 

When a person takes a walk around a baseball field during late fall and winter they will often see just that, a baseball field. 

When I walk around a baseball field during late fall and winter, I see neglect. I see sadness. I see wasted beauty. The reason I chose to do this project in black and white is because this is exactly how I view the baseball field during the off-season, without beauty and without color.

This project is a series of pictures as seen through my eyes. I knew that when I signed up for this class, I would have some difficulties that other students would not. Light and color are extremely important to photos but I cannot see color as well as others.

This being said, I am colorblind. I did not realize it until around middle school but it is all I've ever known. I do not see color as everyone else does but I see it in my own way. I pay more attention to the warmth of shades more than anything else.

I wanted to do this project to spread awareness that there is beauty aside from color. For my birthday, my mom bought me and 3 of my friends tickets to go to a rage room. I decided to take this opportunity to take my pictures for the final assignment. 

I struggled with these pictures more than I originally expected I might. I wasn't sure what the space would be like until I got there, so I was walking in a bit blind.

Almost all of my photos were shot through the window into the room, and a part of this window was a mesh wire to prevent the window from breaking. This made it hard to focus on the subjects on the other side of the glass.

I also struggled to get a good "freeze", because it was darker in the space than I thought it would be. I love going on walks and I was interested in taking a bunch of photos of different houses. Each house in the the Vine neighborhood (where I live) is so unique and different and hold a lot of history. I was also intrigued by the idea that each house, behind every front door lies a life and a world completely different than mine. We walk by houses everyday without giving them more than a second thought but if you take the time to look a little closer you can find them to hold a lot of individuality, character and charm!

In taking a bunch of photos it was cool to compare the houses to one another and notice how their architecture was similar or different. To me, fall serves as a reminder of the importance of perspective. Most people look forward to the change in color of the leaves because it is beautiful and offers entertainment. However, simultaneously as the leaves are gaining their vibrant colors, they are dying. This natural cycle to me serves as a reminder that you can either see the positive and beautiful side of situations in life or you can see the negative and gruesome side of the same situations. While difficult, I aim (and am working to daily) to lean more on the side of seeing the positive perspective of situations I am handed in life.

I chose to use film for this project because I wanted to use the way film desaturates pictures to show the differing and "negative" perspective of the normally vibrant and happy colors of fall. The film came out just as I had hoped and offered a wonderful irony of the normal vibrant colors of fall. Also, one of my biggest goals of this project was to have fun and use the format of taking pictures I most enjoyed and I accomplished that by using my film camera.

I would change some things about this project. In particular, I would change the timing of getting negatives back to me. If they got to me sooner, I would have been able to scan it myself which was my original intention. Also, I would have loved to do the full process of development myself, but with the given timeline it was not possible for me to learn how to develop film with no prior experience.

Regarding the quote from Arthur Ou, I believe that the photographers are each individual person because each individual has the ability to change their mentality and perception of the world, thus changing their photographs. I believe the photograph begins at the point when individuals are able to perceive the world and ends when they are not able to perceive the world anymore.

Overall, I am very pleased with the way that this project turned out. Although my ideas for this photoshoot didn't all play out exactly the way I had planned, I think the results I got are very close to the look I was going for. This shoot was difficult for a few reasons. Firstly, finding models who were available was tricky with it being week 10, and I also didn't get to shoot at all the locations I had hoped due to the time of our shoot being during a school day. Additionally, it was hard to pick out outfits that all matched with each other and fit the same time period because most people don't have a plethora of vintage clothing pieces in their closet. If I were to do this photoshoot again or add onto it, I would definitely like to go into a classroom with old-school looking desks and a blackboard, as well as the library. I also wish that we had more time so that I could have photographed at least another outfit on each model. 

I am proud of the work that I have done this quarter, and I think that each project showed improvement as my knowledge and skills grew. This project was inspired by my love of the art of percussion in all its various forms. I have been able to explore three different forms here at K while also pursuing my main studies. Both Jasper and I have taken classes in Japanese drumming (also known as Taiko), Caribbean steel pans, and African drumming (shown here on a djembe).
 
In pursuing how I was going to show these different forms, I focused on how the background and lighting affected the scenes. Taiko drums have a loud, resonant sound that you can feel in your chest, and the large, dark wood doors felt representative of that. The neutral seamless allowed me to show off the reflections of the steel pan and didn't take away from the subtle complexity of this instrument. I wanted the red of the djembe to pop with the bricks, and the "golden hour" sun also helped with highlighting how Jasper's hands hit the drum.
 
I mostly focused on Jasper's hands in these pictures to highlight the differences in style of these forms of percussion. We never really talked about the past trauma, all we do is laugh and talk the whole hour. She is one of my best friends, she comes to my acapella performances and likes listening to my stupid adventures. This project was inspired by my love of horses and the connection that I have with them. I wanted to show many different combinations (riders and horses) and have the photos reflect the individualized connections between each of them. I also wanted to capture the serenity and peace of being near horses and how they can be a mood booster. What can be difficult about making a connection with a horse is that there is no verbal communication on their part and very little on your part. It’s all about feeling. While in competition, you are not allowed to speak to your horse and your cues are supposed to be invisible (not showing any use of reins or leg). It is supposed to appear as if you and your horse are in total agreement on where to go and what to do. Training horses is much more difficult than just showing. Imagine having to teach someone how to do something without the use of words and without force. While these pictures don’t show the disagreements, they show how two animals can communicate and connect without language, just kindness and patience.

I always enjoy creative freedom because I feel that I have a lot of different things I like to photograph. During the class, I also worked with the theater department to do their headshots and pictures for their Senior Performance Series (SPS). I had a lot of fun setting up the lighting and doing headshots, I got to meet a lot of new people and get to know the theater department better. I also took pictures at Rebecca Chan’s performance of Zipped. It was an awesome performance and great practice for me with the new and varying lighting. Overall, I learned a lot more about my camera and how to use it.
