The Marshall Plan in 1948 was a big effort by the United States to help Western Europe after World War II. Many European countries were destroyed by the war, with ruined cities and struggling economies. Secretary of State George Marshall suggested giving $13 billion in aid to help them rebuild. The United States sent food, supplies, and money to fix factories, roads, and homes. This helped countries like Germany, France, and Italy recover quickly, making them less likely to fall to communism.

In the 1950s, Senator Joseph McCarthy started accusing people in the Unitedstates of being communists, even though he often had no real proof. This happened during a time called the Red Scare, when people were scared that communism might spread, especially after the Soviet Union got nuclear weapons. McCarthy held big public hearings, and many people, like government workers and even actors, were accused of being communists and lost their jobs. Even though most of the accusations were false, it created a lot of fear and made people suspicious of each other. It had a big impact on American politics for years.
