         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>education system</strong><br>-educators viewed as part of the extended family; greatly respected<br>-structure similar to US: national, municipal, and district levels<br>-grade levels and ages similar to US. Pre-K to college: age 3-25<br>-teach moral education<br>-letter grades given at elementary level, ranked amongst peers in middle and high school, letter grades in university<br>-stay in homeroom most of the day at all levels<br>-2-3 hours of homework in middle school per night, and even more in high school<br>-lecture style learning<br>-students do not discuss nor ask questions. teachers welcome questions but students feel ashamed to not understand.<br>-no group activities and no groups due to ability<br>-rote memorization is the primary learning style<br>-schools are co-ed. after school study groups are gendered<br>-move to other rooms for music and art<br>-teachers move from class to class in middle and high school to teach their subject<br>-one hour specials<br>-few discipline issues<br>-teacher is serious and strict<br>-direct eye contact with the teacher is considered inappropriate and disrespectful<br>-call teacher "teacher"<br>-teachers are given gifts on Teacher's Day and Thanksgiving. impolite to open gifts immediately.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Education system</strong> <br>- Preschool, Kindergarten, High School and University schools are not required. <br>Elementary schools grade 1-6, ages 6-12 are 4-6 hours/day mornings or afternoons Sept-June. Little, if any, but mainly in math and English or French. <br>-Most lessons are characterized by teacher-fronted lectures.<br>-Test and quizzes are very strict and formal. <br>- In rural schools, where books cannot be afforded, teachers write the entire lessons on the chalkboard, and the students copy every word onto their papers. <br>-Students speak only when asked a question. <br>Students attach great importance to their grades. <br>-Corporal punishment is permissible both at home and at school.<br>- A formal relationship exists between the teacher and the students, and the teacher has total authority. <br>- There is no concept of Parent-Teacher Association in Haiti, and parents believe that the teacher knows what is best for the student. </div>]]></description>
