Technological advances enable companies to connect with wider markets, which means the more people you reach via social media advertising will widen your market. Example radio was a common form of advertising, but not all people may listen to that station. The internet has opened a whole new way of reaching the consumer.

Gaps in the market place:
Opportunity for change when a business can see a gap in the market for a product or service and been able to adapt quickly and tap into that market. For example you hear that there is a long wait for a plumber or painter for example to do small repairs, so you hire staff and have another level of service to meet small jobs on a weekly basis rather than have all staff tied up on major jobs like building of new business or housing developments. Or you start up your own business and branch out as a sole trader.

The Economic forces have an external impact on a business for for example Christchurch and the rebuild, opportunity to expand your business by opening another business in Christchurch or expanding if you are already in Christchurch.
Caroline Franklin

New knowledge as an external source - The changes in technology increases on a daily basis, with these changes a number of new opportunities will open for organisations. Increased changes in the internet and the way people conduct their daily shopping is changing rapidly. Changes in technology is all about finding ways to do things better.
Changes in perception, moods and meaning as an external source - Over time populations and people change. The way they view life changes, where they take their meaning from, and how they feel about things also is modified over time and smart companies must pay attention to this in order to capitalize (and avoid becoming forgotten, a relic of ages past).

Here are two really good examples. First is a principle called “down-aging” which refers to people who look at 50 as being 40. Industries have responded to this, most notably in the cosmetic and personal care industry which provides plenty of solutions to help these people look younger. Full industries are creeping up that make people feel younger. Have you spotted any lately?

Religion is another example. Across the world we’ve seen Islam and atheism rise. Companies should adapt as overall meaning changes in culture.

Sonja Kruger

=

A change in the economical environment means that an organisation has competitors. When a new competitor enters the market this means that a business needs to prepare to change it ways in order to be competitive. For example; In the Raw Food market; companies are always needing to come up with new flavours and promotions in order to be competitive.

2. Political changes means that an organisation has to respond to change in laws and regulations. An example of this could be when minimum wage increases. This means that an organisation needs to respond to this change in law and increase their wages. An increase in wages means that internal changes made need to take place also such as employees hours.

3. Structural change in an organisation can mean that new leadership and management role become available. This can create change in the work environment meaning that employees become more efficient in the work, this therefore creating an effective work environment.

4. Change in the international environment means that an organisation needs to be ready for the increasing globalisation of markets. The global markets effects ALL businesses. It means that a business is not just effected nationally but globally and an organisation needs to be prepared to change its ways in order to be effective.

Gracie Carlyle

I have had a double Knee replacement so this meant that I could risk hurting my knees and having to endure stiff, painful knees for the next few days, also if I didn't do the wood I would be risking the wood getting wet when it rained next. this risks the wood not be usable until it drys. As I live in Taupo we get very cold and frosty nights, I have three kids m my household, do do I risk them getting sick from not being able to heat the house. In the end I stacked the wood and spent the next two days with the stiff, sore knees but it was worth it as it rained heavily the next day.

Penelope Rye

Change is indeed inevitable, be in our day to day life, work or even in business, it is part of everyone’s life.

Years ago, I worked in a company where you see passion among staff and a depth loyalty to the company which was truly unique. The management developed and nurtured an environment that empowered people to be the best that they can be. The relationship among staff were like a family despite being a multicultural company.

Due to the change in economic environment, where supplier cannot sustain the demand of both branches, the company must choose between the two of which one to close so they will combine the operations in one site. The final decision to close has been difficult according to the higher ups considering the number of staff impacted, of which I am among those 200+ staff. However, for the company to continue with their business, sacrificing one branch is the best option.

In our part, it was hard considering we put our life, time and effort on it. It may be hard to understand at times, but life must go on they say. We may feel the uncertainty all around us but what’s important is how we pick up those pieces in our lives and try to make it whole and start all over again. It is hard I tell you especially when you have to start making those CV’s and all that. But hey, we can survive in this uncertain world.

Candice Tabil

Economical environment. Around your company there are competitors, suppliers, different interest rates, unemployment rates, income settlement, credit policy, gross domestic product, inflation, the level of international trade… All these things will have a high influence on companies and the need for changes in the organization. You need to track them in order to make the right decisions for change.

Technological environment. Technology is simply the use of knowledge, methods and techniques that transform the inputs into the outputs of the organization. The rate with which technology as an external source of organizational change can influence on organization varies from industry to industry. As an entrepreneur, you will need to follow the development of new technology in your industry and use the latest achievements in technology development in your own business. Because of that technology will require organizational changes.

Socio-cultural environment. Socio-cultural environment as the external environment or source of organizational changes contains people’s values, habits, norms, attitudes and demographic characteristics. Every society has different sociocultural characteristics based on the region, ethnics, settlement, etc. All of these factors will have a high influence on the way how your business operates or will operate in the future.

Political environment. This area as an external source of organizational change deal with the laws and bylaws retrieved by the parliament as well as regulations issued by the government. Political area contains elements such as legislation, government stability, strikes, political situation in neighboring countries, taxation… These sources of organizational change must be respected by entrepreneurs and incorporated in the work of their companies.

Puarava Paiaaua

I was approach to become a Manger for a different company and working in environment that worked around customer services. Manging Online department, which is based on technology and building relationships with other team members and customers. Not knowing if this will be the best move for myself in the long run as I would be leaving a company I grew with and also loved. Being a Baker isn't the best for a solo mother as times are erratic and work dose tend to get harder on the body as you age. I weighed my Pros and Cons and went for the leap, and I must being a online manger, helped me grow more and learn more and made me seek to aim higher.

Hine Kupa
