The roots of it can be traced back to the 1920s in Shanghai. Shidaiqu (时代曲) was used to describe all types of chinese songs recorded in China, and Li Jinhui was a prominent composer of that period who created the first music of this kind called ‘The Drizzler’. Buck Clayton was a figure who brought american jazz influence to China in the 1920s as well. 

From 1949, after the Chinese Communist Party appeared, chinese pop music was blue-penciled, named as ‘Yellow Music’. The music business then changed directions to Hong Kong, and C-Pop was advertised, composed and trademarked regionally. In the ‘60s, western pop and rock music had strong influence on chinese music. During that time, mandopop from Taiwan and cantopop from Hong Kong were the more outstanding genres. 

Cantopop blew up in 1974, which began growing fast. Those were the days where famous singers like Leslie Cheung and George Lam took over the industry. In the 1980s, renowned artists made a name for themselves in C-Pop, like the ‘Four Heavenly Kings’: Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Teresa Teng, Lena Lim and Lee Yee are great representatives for this phase too. 

Cantopop went through a slump through the beginning of the 2000s but recovered in fame in the 2010s when boy groups such as Mirror debuted. Television had singing and dancing competitions which piqued the audience’s interest in C-Pop. 

Nowadays, we see many artists spreading C-Pop around the world by holding world tours, such as Mayday, Jay Chou and Eason Chan. They have a repertoire of a mixture of the 3 genres, which generally appeals to the mainstream crowd. Mandopop still conquers as the main subgenre due to C-Pop groups like TFBOYS and Nine Percent, who took inspirations from their neighbouring countries Korea (K-Pop) and Japan (J-Pop). 

The historical origin of Hokkien pop comes from a Japanese enka base instead of a Chinese shidaiqu (时代曲）base. Because it developed from traditional Japanese enka, it has become diverse in its varieties.

The most popular Taiwanese female singer to date is Jody Chiang, who has numerous Taiwanese albums dating from the early 1980s. Another famous singer in Taiwan Chris Hung is a Taiwanese enka and Hokkien pop singer and television host. Widely known as the "king of Taiwanese pop" alongside Jody Chiang, the "Queen of Taiwanese pop."

In 1981, she made her official debut with the Japanese album "Tokyo Holiday" under her real name "Jiang Shuhui" . In 1984, the Hokkien album " Farewell Coast " was released and became popular. In 1990, won the Best Female Singer Award at the first Taiwan Golden Melody Awards. In 1992, the Hokkien album "The Voice of the Drunken " was released in Mandarin. The style changed from sad to warm and bright. The sales volume of the album reached 3 million copies. In 1975~1993, Taiwan's Top 100 Albums ranked No. 28 overall ( ranked No. 4 in singing ).

 From 2000 to 2003, won the Best Dialect Female Singer Award at the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards for four consecutive years with her works, announced that she would no longer apply for the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards Singer Award, and changed to the "Best Taiwanese Album Award".

From 2004 to 2005, won the "Best Taiwanese Pop Singing Album" award at the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards for two consecutive years. In 2009, won the 10th to 19th favorite songs of the 20th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards with the song " Family Queen ". In 2010, the album " Want to Marry " was released and won the "Best Taiwanese Pop Singing Album Award" at the 22nd Taiwan Golden Melody Awards and the top ten albums of the year by the Chinese Musicians Exchange Association. 

In 2013, the last album "Flying Away" was released, which won the top ten albums of the year from the Chinese Musicians Exchange Association. As of 2015, Jiang Hui has won 5 best singer awards and 5 best album awards at the Taiwan Golden Melody Awards.

In 2015, after holding 25 "Blessings" tour concerts, Feng Mai retired and bid farewell to the music scene ; on June 27 of the same year, she won the "Golden Melody Special Contribution Award" at the 26th Taiwan Golden Melody Awards.

He sang on stage with his father Hong Yifeng when he was 5 years old . Chris Hung recorded his first album "Orphan Tears"《孤兒淚》  when he was 10 years old. He went to Japan to learn singing when he was 13 years old. Chris Hung become well known by singing “One Little Umbrella” 《一支小雨傘》.

He has won the Best Male Singer Award at the Golden Melody Awards and the Best Male Singer Award for Dialect Songs (3 times in total). His Taiwanese songs are especially popular and have swept every corner of Taiwan. Before Shen Wencheng, the earlier Taiwanese singer made an important contribution to the establishment of the status of Taiwanese songs in the Taiwanese music industry. He also won the 2002 and 2003 Golden Bell Awards for the Host of Singing and Music Variety Shows.

In 2005, he obtained permanent residency in Canada as a "self-employed immigrant". It was not until around 2009 that he began to work hard to sit in the immigration prison. Therefore, in 2013, he had dual citizenship in the Republic of China and Canada.

Monster's electric guitar tone and direction have been accentuated over the past few albums and are now Mayday's signature, an increasingly Japanese style highlighted by Monster's own role in the group. Stone is still very low-key, "Starry Night" sounds like stone's work, he could have done more. Masa won an award for “Noah's Ark”, and in fact, his music has echoes of Mayday in its earliest days. After all these years, Masa is the only one who has barely changed. The Bass part of the album, where he plays as hard as ever, is also the best part of the five, and listening to the bass line of “Washing Machine” is already enjoyable.
