Canto-pop, short for "Cantonese pop,"designates a kind of popular music that originated in Hong Kong and is largely sung in the Cantonese language. It first appeared in the 1960s and rapidly gained recognition over the ensuing decades, becoming one of the most popular music genres in Hong Kong and other Cantonese-speaking areas like Guangdong and Macau.

Canto-pop is distinguished by the blending of Chinese and Western musical components, drawing inspiration from Western pop, rock, jazz, R&B, and other genres as well as traditional Cantonese music. The sound of the genre changed over time, absorbing fresh musical styles and production methods while also adjusting to modern trends.

Canto-pop lyrics frequently cover a wide range of content, such as love, relationships, life events, societal challenges, and cultural identity. The music might be rock-infused anthems, energetic and catchy pop songs, or heartfelt ballads. Because most of the lyrics are in Cantonese, there is a better chance of connecting with the Cantonese-speaking audience.

Numerous well-known musicians and bands who have experienced enormous popularity and economic success are products of the canto-pop movement. These musicians' distinctive vocal techniques, stage performances, and personas all add to their allure. Canto-pop has also played a significant role in influencing Hong Kong's and other countries' popular culture, fashion, and entertainment sectors.

The evolution of C-pop can be categorised into 4 time periods. The first was before China was named in the 1920s, the second roughly belonging to between 1949 to 1976, the third era during the reformation of China to the late 20th century, and the last from the 21st century to modern times.

The roots of it can be traced back to the 1920s in Shanghai. Shidaiqu (时代曲) was used to describe all types of chinese songs recorded in China, and Li Jinhui was a prominent composer of that period who created the first music of this kind called ‘The Drizzler’. Buck Clayton was a figure who brought american jazz influence to China in the 1920s as well.

From 1949, after the Chinese Communist Party appeared, chinese pop music was blue-penciled, named as ‘Yellow Music’. The music business then changed directions to Hong Kong, and C-Pop was advertised, composed and trademarked regionally. In the ‘60s, western pop and rock music had strong influence on chinese music. During that time, mandopop from Taiwan and cantopop from Hong Kong were the more outstanding genres.

Cantopop blew up in 1974, which began growing fast. Those were the days where famous singers like Leslie Cheung and George Lam took over the industry. In the 1980s, renowned artists made a name for themselves in C-Pop, like the ‘Four Heavenly Kings’: Jacky Cheung, Andy Lau, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. Teresa Teng, Lena Lim and Lee Yee are great representatives for this phase too.

Cantopop went through a slump through the beginning of the 2000s but recovered in fame in the 2010s when boy groups such as Mirror debuted. Television had singing and dancing competitions which piqued the audience’s interest in C-Pop.

Nowadays, we see many artists spreading C-Pop around the world by holding world tours, such as Mayday, Jay Chou and Eason Chan. They have a repertoire of a mixture of the 3 genres, which generally appeals to the mainstream crowd. Mandopop still conquers as the main subgenre due to C-Pop groups like TFBOYS and Nine Percent, who took inspirations from their neighbouring countries Korea (K-Pop) and Japan (J-Pop).

Mayday originated from So Band, which was founded in 1995 by Ashin(阿信）, Monster（怪兽）, and the founding drummer Chien You-ta （钱佑达）while studying at National Taiwan Normal University's Affiliated Senior High School（国立台湾师范大学附属高级中学）. Masa (瑪莎) and Stone (石頭), who were students at the same school, later joined them. The band members moved on to other universities after graduation, but they kept playing in bars and restaurants. Additionally, they made a concerted effort to support Taiwan's expanding rock music movement. The group registered in 1997 under the name Mayday to play at the Formoz Festival. Mayday was heavily influenced by The Beatles, who believed that music had the potential to transform the world and preach love and peace values via their songs.

It is the eighth studio album released by Mayday, and it was released after a hiatus of three years since ‘Poetry of the Day After’.

A piece of work with a regressive quality. Lots of electric guitar solos and riffs, such as "Three Fools" and "Orz", show Mayday is still a tech-savvy group. Monster's electric guitar tone and direction have been accentuated over the past few albums and are now Mayday's signature, an increasingly Japanese style highlighted by Monster's own role in the group. Stone is still very low-key, "Starry Night" sounds like stone's work, he could have done more. Masa won an award for “Noah's Ark”, and in fact, his music has echoes of Mayday in its earliest days. After all these years, Masa is the only one who has barely changed. The Bass part of the album, where he plays as hard as ever, is also the best part of the five, and listening to the bass line of “Washing Machine” is already enjoyable. Many veteran Mayday listeners, including Ye Yunping, the author of a lengthy interview in The Monster House Roll Call, also agree that “Second Round” is the beginning of Mayday to return to the right path, the orchestra component is strengthened, perhaps also they understand that they are a band, this core can not change. If you ask, what is the difference between the music made by a pop band like Mayday and the music made by a pop singer through a band (such as Yoga Lin's "Wake Up")? That question, put to Mayday, and they could answered it with “Second Round”. The relationship between the members of the band is collaborative, rather than the relationship between the lead singer and the backing band.

In an interview, the band members revealed that they were inspired by U2's ability to create anthemic songs with powerful guitar riffs, emotive lyrics, and a distinctive vocal style. U2's music has influenced Mayday's sound in many ways, including their use of soaring choruses, layered instrumentation, and introspective lyrics.

Like many of the musicians I know, we all started from church, and through there, I began to venture into other instruments while keeping drums as my main forte. Ever since getting my drum certification in Rockschool and Yamaha, I have been actively participating in sessions and gigs related to drumming as an aspiring sessionist. I am currently learning drums under the tutelage of John Thomas hoping to "surpass" him one day. Fingers crossed.
