Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBL) are distinct approaches to language education, although both emphasize practical application and skill development. TBLT focuses on using authentic language to complete meaningful tasks, while CBL emphasizes the attainment of specific competencies. TBLT is not the same as CBL, though TBLT can help students work on project-based learning because it includes many of the same skills, but in a smaller way.

Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT):

* Definition TBLT is an approach where students actively communicate to achieve a goal or complete a task. It involves using authentic language to complete meaningful tasks in the target language.

* Focus TBLT centers on completing specific tasks that mirror real-world situations, providing opportunities to use the target language in authentic contexts. The focus is on developing communicative competence and language proficiency.

* Real-World Application Tasks are designed to reflect real-life scenarios, such as visiting a doctor or calling customer service.

* Assessment Assessment in TBLT is based on the outcomes of the tasks rather than the accuracy of prescribed language forms.

* Skills Development TBLT enhances communicative competence, linguistic fluency, accuracy, and pragmatic competence. It also integrates 21st-century skills like communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.

* Lesson Structure TBLT involves a clear task sequence, including pre-task activities, task performance, and post-task reflection.

Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBL):

* While the search results do not offer a detailed explanation of Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBL), it is generally understood to be an approach that emphasizes the attainment of specific competencies.

Relationship and Differences:

* TBLT can be seen as a subset of communicative language teaching (CLT). Communicative Language Teaching sees meaningful communication as the goal whereas Task-based learning takes it a bit further.

* TBLT focuses on developing the ability to express meaning and make classroom language communicative by connecting it to real-life situations.

* Both TBL and project-based learning (PBL) develop communication skills. TBL focuses on developing communicative competence and language proficiency. TBL can be a starting point for teaching students how to communicate, collaborate, and work on presentations, which are skills also found in PBL.

* TBL allows for targeted language practice and skill development in specific areas, providing immediate feedback and opportunities for improvement.

* In TBLT, activities involving real communication are essential, and using language to carry out meaningful tasks promotes learning.

* TBLT lessons are more student-centered, basing the lesson on completing and presenting a central task. Students use all their language resources rather than practicing one pre-selected item. A natural context develops from the students' experiences, making the language personalized and relevant.

In summary, Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) is distinct from Competency-Based Language Teaching (CBL), with TBLT emphasizing authentic, real-world tasks to promote communication skills and language fluency.

1. Theoretical Foundations: Meaning vs. Competence

TBLT is rooted in communicative language teaching (CLT) and second language acquisition (SLA) theories, emphasizing meaning-based learning and real-world language use (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 103). It argues that learners acquire language best when they engage in meaningful tasks that simulate authentic communication (Wang, 2022).

CBLT, on the other hand, is based on behaviorist and functional-notional approaches, focusing on measurable competencies rather than the process of learning (Richards & Rogers, 2001). It is concerned with developing specific language skills that align with workplace or societal needs rather than spontaneous communication.

TBLT prioritizes fluency and interactive language use, which may lead to greater communicative competence but lacks a structured framework for measuring progress. In contrast, CBLT ensures systematic skill development but may limit learners' ability to use language in unpredictable real-life situations.

2. Learning Objectives: Process-Oriented vs. Outcome-Oriented

TBLT is process-oriented, meaning that learning happens as students complete tasks that reflect real-world communication (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 105). The goal is to engage learners in authentic activities such as problem-solving, decision-making, and discussion.

CBLT is outcome-oriented, meaning that learners must achieve a pre-defined set of competencies, such as reading job instructions or writing official emails (Richards & Rogers, 2001). The curriculum is designed around specific abilities that can be tested and certified.

While TBLT fosters learner autonomy and engagement, it may lack the structured progression that some learners require. CBLT ensures standardized learning outcomes, making it useful for professional training, but its rigid structure may not encourage creative or spontaneous language use.

3. Teaching Methods: Task Complexity vs. Competency Drills

TBLT organizes lessons around tasks that require students to use language to achieve a goal (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 107). For example, students might plan a trip, negotiate a contract, or conduct an interview.

CBLT follows a modular approach, where language is broken into specific skills and sub-skills, such as making a phone call or filling out a form (Richards & Rogers, 2001). Teaching often involves repetition, role-plays, and drills to ensure competency.

TBLT allows for more dynamic and realistic language use, making it preferable in communicative settings. However, some argue that it lacks clear guidance for beginners. CBLT, by breaking down language into smaller mastery units, is useful for vocational training but may not sufficiently prepare learners for complex interactions.

4. Assessment: Performance-Based vs. Criteria-Based

TBLT assessment focuses on task completion and communication effectiveness rather than accuracy. Teachers evaluate fluency, coherence, and interactional ability rather than strict grammar rules (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 110).

CBLT uses criterion-referenced assessments, meaning students must demonstrate predefined competencies in a structured test or performance evaluation (Richards & Rogers, 2001).

TBLT's flexible assessment is more suitable for real-world communication, but it can be difficult to standardize. CBLT ensures measurable progress, making it more reliable for institutions, but it may fail to assess spontaneous communication skills.

5. Role of the Teacher: Facilitator vs. Trainer

In TBLT, teachers act as facilitators, guiding students through communicative tasks and offering feedback on effectiveness rather than correctness (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 108).

In CBLT, teachers function more as trainers, ensuring that learners achieve the required competencies through direct instruction and assessment (Richards & Rogers, 2001).

TBLT encourages learner independence, but students may struggle without clear guidance. CBLT provides structured support, but it risks making students passive recipients of knowledge.

6. Applicability: General Language Learning vs. Professional Training

TBLT is commonly used in general language classrooms, EFL/ESL programs, and academic settings to improve fluency and communicative competence (Mudinillah et al., 2024, p. 112).

CBLT is widely used in vocational and workplace training, where learners must acquire specific skills for professional settings, such as customer service or medical English (Richards & Rogers, 2001).

TBLT is better for communicative contexts, while CBLT is more effective for career-focused training.
