This song is an anti-war anthem and it's to be told through the perspective of a soldier at war. In the song, Jimi Hendrix states "Evil man make me kill you even though we’re only families apart
Well I pick up my axe and fight like a farmer
You know what I mean?
Hey, and your bullets keep knocking me down"
These lyrics basically mean the war makes us fight against each other, and causes us to harm one another even though we're not that different from one another. In a way, these lyrics are trying to further prove the point that war causes the death of many innocent people and that humanity is lost during war. Throughout the song, we also hear Jimi Hendrix's solos and riffs which are meant to replicate the sounds of despair and violence at war.

Whenever he performed this song he would always begin the song with a line to dedicate it to those at war. Jimi Hendrix recognized the hardships and issues with war which make this song more personal. The lyrics take a more intense turn when you try to understand them and look at them from the point of view he is trying to tell this story from which is a lost soldier trapped in war whether that is with himself or with others. Whenever these soldiers come back from war they are all carrying wounds with them due to what they witnessed or experienced though they may not be seen on them they are still there.  Ultimately the lyrics and the riffs add a heavy meaning and sentiment to this song.
