23.9.2020
Wednesday
5 pm
Dear diary,
My day was going well but then something reminded me of my past, about weathering the storm in Ersama.
On 27th October I went to the coastal town of Erasma in Orissa to spend a day with my friend seven years after my mother’s demise. It was that fateful day the storm lashed in full fury with heavy wind and rain. Trees were uprooted and water entered neck deep inside the friend’s house. For two days, everyone took refuge on the roof till the situation calmed down a bit. Although everyone tried to pursue me to stay for a few more days as the situation had not fully settled, I was determined to move ahead, wondering how my family was. Using a stick to guide me, I waded my way through the water to my village, eighteen kilometres away. Once there, I waded through water. On the way I found two friends of my uncle. They were also returning home. We had to push away many floating dead bodies of human beings and animals to move ahead. There were hardly any houses left in the villages that we passed. I kept thinking that no one in my family would have survive. Afterwards, I finally reached my village Kalikuda. The roof was the only thing that was left of my house. So I went to the Red Cross shelter to look for my family there. I saw my maternal grandmother there. It was a miracle for us to see her alive. I had thought they died but my family was there. I decided to assess the damage and the danger awaiting the survivors. All the houses in the village had been washed away. I organized a group of youths of my village. It pressurized the merchant to give them some rice. They made a fire and cooked the rice. However, the rice was rotting. My next step was to clean the place of filth, urine and floating dead bodies. On the fifth day, a military helicopter dropped food. But it didn’t return. The group deputed the children to lie there. They had the empty utensils on their stomachs. It was to communicate to the passing helicopters that we were hungry. Finally, we got food through airdropped. I became a saviour. I brought the orphaned children and made a shelter for them. I asked the women to look after them. But i soon found that women and children were sinking deeper and deeper in their grief. I made them join the food-for-work programme. It was started by a Non- Government Organization (NGO). I engaged other volunteers to help keep widows to start their lives. I also believed that orphans should be resettled in their own community. Six months passed soon after the super cyclone. I now thought about myself. Earlier i had no time to bother about my own pain. The widows and orphaned children of the village thought of me only in their hours of grief.

I’m happy that I made a correct decision and saved many lives.

Prashant
