Why were drive in theaters booming?

After world war 2 drive in theaters spread across the country.Mostly because of the new advanced technology. In 1942 there were nearly 100 drive ins scattered across America. Then in just 6 years the number increased to 820. So in the 1950s they added concession stands which brought more people and by 1958 there were 4063 drive ins in the US and Canada. Eventually Hollingshead added playgrounds and ramps so that cars could get on different levels to see the movie. And finally people could also bring babies and cigarettes which offered more flexibility and this caused more people to come.

www.smithsonianmag.com

JB

He got the idea of a drive in because "his mother was-How shall i say it ?-rather large for indoor movie theaters said Jim Kopp of the united-drive in- theater owner . What he did to see how it would work and how he got his invention was he put his mother in a car and tied a sheet to 2 trees and put a 1928 projector on the hood of the car " And thats how he got his invention and a lot of people probably enjoyed it because it was comfortable . Richard Hoillngshead expanded his event-ion like this he created a ramp system so every one could see the movie . A few years later Hollingshead in June of 1933 he open his theater to the public costing 25 cent per person . The classic drive in talier was from 1957 was dancing hot dogs
MM

https://www.smithsonianmag.com/
